ZombiU Review

ZombiU for the Wii U

ZombiU is a very polarizing game.  Players either like it or they don’t, which also seems to be the case when it comes to critical reviews.  We were actually really shocked when we saw the kinds of scores the game was getting — they had us thinking it was going to be the Red Steel of the Wii U, but we had seen enough previews to know it was worth trying.  Turns out, we actually like it.

ZombiU has a graet atmosphere.
ZombiU has a graet atmosphere.

In the basic game mode you start off as a survivor that you can use for the entire game.  You get no info other than a name and occupation.  If you die, that character is dead forever (as a zombie in-game) and you wake up in a safe house as someone new (Unless playing in the 1 life survivor mode wherein if you die you game over).  In some cases where you think your character is super ugly, just feed him or her to the zombies and get someone else.  The premise of the game is simple: Go through the story learning how to survive, then learn about a plot line (with a ton of back story you can read via files in-game) where you’re trying to find a cure and get out of there.  To be honest, the story presentation is almost non-existent, but available for you to seek out on your own.  To oversimplify things, the game is about surviving against zombies in a moderately open world that isn’t terribly big or, to be quite honest, all that open.

What ZombiU has going for it is the atmosphere.  It’s generally not scary, but it is dark, dank, and the effects on the screen almost make it look like a dirty lense that makes it look like you’ve found lost footage.  There’s one area where it’s raining and the atmosphere is just fantastic.  Overall pretty nice visuals.

Utilize the GamePad to perform a variety of innovative features, and a few gimmicky ones as well.

On your Wii U Gamepad you get the Prepper Pad and Bug out Bag (BoB).  You’re able to ping the map to see if there are any zombies around you sorta like a sonar that can be fooled by harmless rats.  Eventually you can upgrade this to constantly scan instead of having to manually do it.  You can also manage your inventory on the prepper pad, and hold up the Gamepad to scan a room for items.  All of the above happen in real-time and show your character on the main screen performing the activity.  This means you can’t go looking for something in your bag mid-fight.  There’s a bit of a learning curve in terms of the controls and learning to manage your inventory, but it gets quicker.  Some other activities like lock picking (one of the better implementations we’ve seen), and removing a sewer lid (a crappy picture of a sewer lid you tap) make using the GamePad hit or miss.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Review

It’s been a while since we last played a Call of Duty game. We have always enjoyed the series, despite burning out on the familiar formula from time to time.  Black ops was the last  Call of Duty we played.  We skipped MW3, giving us just enough time to start feeling the itch to jump back into the frag-box.

Single-Player: A Flare for the Dramatic

Call of Duty Black Ops 2 Stealth Camo
The AI loves to wear stealth camo. Too bad my scope can scan for it! Notice I can also see through walls?

Maybe it’s just us, but the single-player story is hard to follow.  Right from the beginning you are thrown into a storyline based off the original Black Ops.  Knowing characters from the original helps a lot, but we still felt lost as the cut-scenes randomly flashed from past to present and back again. The overall futuristic setting of 2025 is definitely cool. Using the future tech was easily the best part of the campaign, but we both feel like the devs were a bit optimistic with where we’ll be at in 13 years — seeing through walls, cloaking, and all that stuff.

The campaign features the usual highly scripted, event filled, story driven gameplay.  You’ll be riding horses while shooting rockets, gliding around with a flying squirrel suit, piloting a jet plane, EMP grenading invisible bad guys, and performing all of the expected awesome, and oft wacky, Call of Duty events.  We never felt like the game made us do the same crazy thing twice.

The War Z Alpha/Beta Impressions

The War Z Logo

I’m currently playing The War Z in what is either an Alpha or Beta version.  Honestly, I have no idea.  Given my experience with the game so far, and my history with Day Z, I thought it would be helpful for me to share my thoughts on the game so far.

Overall Impressions

The War Z is a much, much, much more polished game than Day Z.  War Z is faster-paced, and slightly less realistic.  The gun-play is excellent, the movement is smooth, and performance is great (although I have an issue where sometimes my computer locks up when I load into a new server).  The War Z gives me a constant sense of imminent danger, and lots of anxiety when I see other players.  With a few important additions and tweaks, this can be a fantastic game.  More after the break. Why we’re excited for the Wii U launch

The Wii U launches on the 18th of this month!  You all know by now that we enjoy console games, and we’re fans of Nintendo consoles.  Some of you have expressed skepticism over what the Wii U will offer gamers.  Back during E3 of this year we wrote at length about the console, some of the games coming out, and how we felt that Nintendo and the Wii U had the best overall showing of games this year.

Here are some of the games coming out for the Wii U (at launch) that really convinced us that the Wii U was a must-buy.

ZombiU for the Wii U

What really got us excited about ZombiU were the parallels we could see between ZombiU and games like Dark Souls.  We’ve read that the game will be brutally hard, and filled with the same trial and error gameplay experienced in Dark Souls.  A game about surviving against zombies should be difficult, unforgiving, and provide that sense of complete danger.

Some of the features look great.   When you die, your character turns into a zombie that you will encounter while you play the role of a different survivor.  You can actually kill your zombie-self and take back your gear.   Integrating other players in their own single-player games, like Dark Souls did, is something we’ll probably see a lot of on the Wii U and in ZombiU.  For example, when you die your friends will get alerted and get to come hunt you down.

The Wii U GamePad is going to really make the experience unique.  If there’s anything that ZombiU will have that other Zombie survival games can’t have, it’s the integration of these controls and what they allow the player to do.  The video below highlights them nicely.
