Reminiscing about DAOC

If Warhammer is even one iota like this…

  • Nice vids. DAoC will always hold fond memories as the first MMORPG I ever bothered to hit the level cap in . . . even if it did take me a long time and several cancellations and resubs :p

I think the reactive and positional weapon style combat has yet to be surpassed in an MMORPG, and the Albion Wizard STILL has the best spell effects of any caster in any game. When ‘next generation’ MMORPGs like WoW and EQ2 came out I expected big things from their effects, yet DAoC left them in the dust. Weapon procs that had a visual effect — sometimes you used a weapon just because the proc looked so cool, even though you had a better weapon. Why the hell doesn’t WoW have visible offensive weapon procs? So disappointing.

I have high hopes that WAR will take DAoC concepts in a modernized game. As much as I appreciate certain mechanics in DAoC it’s an ancient creaking game at this point, and extremely inaccessible for new or returning players. I have a level 50, but no master levels, no epic armor, no champion weapon, no . . . whatever else they’ve added.

  • That’s basically the only thing baring me from returning to DAOC and spending the rest of my life RvRing – it’s just too inaccessible now. I totally agree about the weapon glows and the reactive and position styles. They remain today the best implementation of any mmo.

  • I had played other MMORPGs before DAOC, but I played that one the most. Still never got a character past the mid 20s. (I have bad alt-itis in every game). I had played UO and EQ some, but stayed in DAOC longer than any MMORPG before. I’m a solo player, though, and found the game too hard to solo. I also played immediately at release, so it may have gotten easier.

  • I played from release up until I couldn’t handle ToA anymore – but I have to say the best time I had in the game was definitely in Thidranki.

  • Yeah man, Thid was the BEST! Some of my best memories are of my bro and I creating necros and getting to Thid, then just sucking the life from those pesky Mid’s. Had a lot of fun with the Animist as well.

I had been hoping for AoC as my next big mmo, but with WAR being done by Mythic and what I have been reading, it has moved to the top of my list.

  • My bro, his friend, and I made 3 hunters and would gank people. It was great times.

There was also this time we made 3 bonedancers and were a huge force to be reckoned with.

  • I loved the sweet, sweet cheese of insta-mez as a Midgard healer. I quit about 6 months after SI, though, and was back in college (while working full time) when ToA came out, and by the time I graduated WoW was out. If it weren’t for DAoC I doubt my interest in WAR would be a tenth of what it is now.

  • When someone /noexp and /norp in Thidranki to be able to stay there for countless hours, you know hes just having pure fun.

    I miss thid :O

prolly had one of each class parked in there.
