E3: K&G’s Nintendo Commentary

Here us our commentary after watching Nintendo’s Conference and looking through the list of games that interest us from Nintendo.  There are a few games which we neglected to include on this quick commentary list which will appear in future commentary posts or receive posts of their own.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii
graevsaysGraev: I think it’s cool that they’re doing another side -scroller on a console and not just on a handheld. I’m a little bummed that they didn’t opt to do a Super Mario World instead of a Super Mario Land, but it hsould still be really good. As for the coop aspect, it’s cool but most likely not going to be online so the only person I’ll have to play with is Keen and he’ll most likely play it for a day meaning I’ll be playing it by myself.

keensaysKeen: Despite what he might think, I’m actually going to play New Super Mario Bros. Wii with Graev all the way through. I’m a fan of the Super Mario ‘lands’, although I agree with Graev that a ‘World’ style would have been more ideal. The trailer shows a few fantastic things like propeller topped outfits and an overall fast pace and exciting pace of coop play. The levels look detailed and the experience, although new, looks like it stays true to the Mario I have known and loved.

Super Mario Galaxy 2
Graev: That “Cool, another Mario game!” is there, but it looks like it plays like and looks to play like the previous Mario Galaxy making it more of a Mario Galaxy 1.5 for me. Adding Yoshi is cool but it will probably be more of the same – not a bad thing.

Keen: It adds Yoshi. What else?

Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story
Graev: Looks great. I played the previous Mario and Luigi titles. The first was fun but the second’s premise was “meh” with the whole alien thing. Having it inside Bowser is a pretty unique idea with possibilities. These games are pretty reminiscent of Mario RPG and I look forward to another. Although, I wish they would just do another Mario RPG.

Golden Sun DS
Graev: They didn’t show much at all, but I’m glad to see another Golden Sun. It’s been a really long time and I enjoyed the first two. I haven’t done much research, but is this a remake for the DS or a completely new game?

Red Steel 2
Graev: Red Steel 1 was kinda disappointing. Red Steel 2 looks like they’re going a completely different direction and that’s probably a good thing. The graphics from the trailer look fantastic and I love their visual style. From what I saw of the gameplay it looks like it should be a really fun game.

Keen: I thought the first was complete crap. The controls were horrible, the gameplay was ‘bleh’, and it actually made me question whether or not the Wii was a legitimate console (Red Steel was my first Wii game). Red Steel 2 has a chance to wipe the slate clean. The trailer gives me hope that they’re going to correct what sucked so hard in the first. I’m not getting my hopes up though.

Metroid: Other M
Graev: It looks like Nintendo is taking it in an entirely different direction especially picking Team Ninja to help develop it. They mentioned that they can make serious gritty type games too so it will be interesting to see how it turns out. At moments during the trailer it seemed like a 3rd person action game like Ninja Gaiden but at other times it showed Samus shooting from first person, so I’m interested in seeing how it will turn out gameplay-wise. If it’s a 3rd person action style you’ll be able to do a lot of the really cool moves that you see Samus do in Smash Bros. It’s a little bumming that Retro Studios isn’t doing it because I liked their Metroid games a lot, but I remember that it was mentioned that moved on to a new project with Nintendo so we’ll see how that turns out.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Crystal Bearers
Graev: They didn’t talk much about it, but it looked like a true FF style game set in the CC universe for the Wii. I would like to get more info on it.

Dead Space Extraction
Graev: I really liked Dead Space on the 360. It’s cool that they’re bringing it to the Wii as a prequel that tells about everything that happened before up to the Dead Space original. It’s on rails, which isn’t a bad thing to me, so it probably helps the Wii handle it better (might explain why it looked nice). I’ll get it.

  • As far as I heard, *as a member of a small dutch nintendo community* Golden Sun DS isn’t a sequel. More of a different story in the same world. But I could be wrong.

Personally I’m really looking forward to Metroid: Other M. Both the gameplay (looked a bit like God of War combo’s) and the universe it’s in are well known for it’s quality. Altough I’ve only played Metroid Prime 1 and am halfway in 2, I do hope they won’t make the story to tough to get into. I guess most people only played MP 1-3.

And from the things I’ve seen about Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story, it looks like it will be really fun, and original aswell. Wich is always a good thing.
