When at first you don’t succeed… make a shooter game!

SGResistanceI’m actually excited about this one.  Stargate Worlds development studio Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment has been running in silent mode and pretty much treading water with SGW for a long time.  In my opinion, they missed a crucial launch window for a MMO.  The series had its day and that day passed quickly as the latter seasons  of SG-1 dwindled on and eventually the show wrapped up.  The great thing about the Stargate Series is that it had Atlantis and now Universe.  Atlantis didn’t run as long as SG-1 but it did introduce a lot of great things to the series.  Unfortunately, it ended in the same way as SG-1 — dragging on too long.  Now that Universe is around (although not a great show, but a decent one) a new window of opportunity is opening up.

They’re going with a third-person shooter in this window.  It’s not the first attempt either.  Stargate: The Alliance was highly anticipated by Graev and I for a while since we are huge fans of SG-1 and watched each new episode when it was still running.  The game never saw the light of day though.  Now that Cheyenne Mountain is making one, I hope that maybe the great potential for a SG shooter will manifest itself into a decent game.

SG-Resistance’s website is a little 1999’ish and there isn’t much information.  Chris Klug (Creative Consultant) addresses the community with a tone of ‘we know we let you down but would you give us a second chance’ and basically represents SGR as a game all about the combat.  I’m expecting the game to run on the same engine as SGW.  I’m expecting it to be similar to Star Wars Battlefront, actually.  I think it has always been a better idea for Stargate to manifest itself in a shooter game and now I think Cheyenne… (or is it Firesky now?)  … knows that too.  In my opinion, this is like a retcon of SGW.  Expect this to completely replace the MMO; I do.

We’ll see what they’re able to pull off.  Given the right people, this game could have spectacular gameplay.  Anyone who has watched SG-1 knows the franchise is packed full of amazing worlds, ships, weapons, and all sorts of goodies.   I can imagine flying an Al’kesh or even battles including Goa’uld motherships and F203’s.  A BF2142 mechanic could exist where you ring up to a mothership or gate over to SGC to destroy the enemy’s base, similar to the Titans in 2142.  As long as their team is creative and understands Stargate and Shooter Games well this can be a ton of fun.

  • I would be excited but given the insanely early listed release date this game has failure written all over it. Based on what I’ve seen on the website this just seems like an attempt to make some money back or make more funding for worlds.

Hopefully that isn’t the case but when a game is announced out of left field in December and has a Q1 2010 release date I don’t see why I should have any faith.

  • I think it’s definitely a last ditch effort. The early release date is probably because they’ll borrow heavily from SGW. Even if it feels more like a HL2 Mod or something, as long as its priced correctly I’ll play it.

  • I hope it is worth playing as I am also a huge SG fan (every series on DVD) and Worlds early beta was looking so sweet.

Supposedly it isn’t borrowing much from SGW as a Firesky staff said in a thread about it just being the PvP part of SGW “Nothing could be further from the truth. It’s a whole new game from the ground up. And while many of the designs and concepts may look familiar, it is a new engine, new code base, new assets, and new design….so… new game.”

Also pretty cool that this will be team-based only and no single-player experience. Using the Unreal 3 engine on small maps should be pretty, staff even said “one of the first games to use Unreal’s new lightmass.”

Disappointed to have seen SGW so far in development and than when the money problems hit, shoved aside and obviously this made in the interim. Maybe it will give them the cash needed to complete SGW, I hope so. Still crossing my fingers for both games to be worth the long wait.

  • As a note since his name gets mentioned: Chris Klug worked on Earth & Beyond, which I enjoyed. The reverse-engineer / disassembly style crafting system was especially good. Such a shame that game fell prey to EA’s blockbuster or cancelled MMO policy at the time.

For SGW: Aside from their various troubles getting the last coat of paint on the thing, I was concerned we would be getting another non-shooting shooter (ala Tabula Rasa). So it’s interesting to see them try to leverage into an actual shooter. I’m thinking I underestimated their descriptions of their combat.

On Stargate overall: Loved the movie, liked SG1, didn’t like Atlantis much. As far as good sci-fi story goes I feel they’ve outdone themselves with SG Universe. When I think of how rare it is for a sci-fi series to step out of the gate with good episodes– I hope they can keep up the pace.

  • If it’s all new code and whatnot that makes me worry even more, but if it is just online/team based only that does cut down on a lot of the work of single player design.

  • Meh, not really very excited. The time for a SG1 FPS was 5 years ago, not now. I’m a little disappointed that the MMO got canned but not that surprised. Anyway, it sounds like they have some engine that they built and want to take advantage of, hence the FPS.

  • Forget the FireFly MMO, where’s my Firefly season 2,3,4 onwards?

That aside, I have trouble believing they’re making this game from the ground up, given the short release date (and complete lack of money). It would make a lot more sense if they were ripping out a chunk of the SGW client and re-packing it as a single player game.
