Thoughts on the newish Mortal Online trailer

I finally got around to viewing the newest Mortal Online trailer.  I liked what I saw and I like what I hear.   Open PvP, full loot, action oriented, mounted combat, and gorgeous graphics.  Watching the video, I noticed the little things such as the animation of mounting the horse.  It’s closer to Oblivion and realism than Darkfall is from what I saw in that video.  The combat in the cave could have been labeled as Oblivion and I probably would not have questioned it (although the torch does look better).   The animations look really nice.

Personally, the combat looks even better than Darkfall.  Not that Darkfall combat is bad, I just don’t like the 3rd person perspective as much as the first person.  That’s total action immersion right there.  In the desert scene with the guy giving off an Altaïr vibe the combat had some really cool effects like a daze and some nasty looking spells that knocked people down which would be fun in PvP.   Blood and killing blow animations are always a plus.  The mounted combat looks tough because of all the bobbing and first person…. let alone getting knocked off (really cool), but again it’s all about that action immersion.

If the skill system is done right, the sieging, and the pvp… it’ll blow Darkfall away.  The graphics look good; maybe too good actually.  I worry about the lag. I signed up for beta and will definitely be following the game. Some real quality stuff being made by these lesser-known companies. More power to them imo.

  • looks pretty damn cool and if it
“If the skill system is done right, the sieging, and the pvp… it’ll blow Darkfall away.”
i believe to as well lol also lolwat its made in the unreal engine? how does that work for an mmo AoC instancing? cose last i knew unreal 3 only allows 32 players.

  • I’ve been following MO a lot since feburary and I’m very happy that you finally talk about this game 🙂

@Malik : For the lag problem, don’t worry. Devs said the world will be divided in zones, but we don’t have much details on that. For sure, it won’t be instances or zones like guildwars.

  • @Malik – the UT3 32-player cap is only in UT3, and it’s a gameplay decision, the engine itself is capable of far more.

There’s several MMOs coming out using the Unreal 3 engine…

    -Global Agenda
    -Huxley
    -Mortal Online
    -one other one…

  • I’m worried about the video lag as well, using the Unreal engine almost hard wires in the cap of players on the screen. The engine has far too many textures to allow 100 people on screen at once within the confines of a normal 512mg video card without texture swapping and hitching galore. I guess the engine has matured some but still. I’ll have to see it to believe

  • I have been following this game for some time now. And was actually wondering when you would take your eyes that way. This is in my eyes, what darkfall should have been. But lets see, lag can become an issue. But the game seems to have so much tense action in it, in the way its played. So it is a must try.
    Also signed up for beta.
Looking forward to see you look closer of this one, on release or if you get into the beta.

  • Darkfall looked like the platonic ideal of badass gameplay from its pre-release videos too! Let’s wait this game is actually released before declaring it a DF-killer.

  • I don’t know about the full time first person mode thou. I really like how DF and Savage 2 utilize the first person for range, 3rd person for mele, but I did like Bushido blade back on PS so maybe I’m wrong.

I’m also concerned about a game that appears to allow kills in ~2-3 hits with full loot (again kinda like Bushido Blade). But this may just be a demo thing.

Either way I’m just glad there is another game that doesn’t follow the WoW mold. I enjoy DF, and look forward to trying this as well. I hope this is a good sign of things to come.

  • Yeah, no doubt I hope this style of MMO thrives. There is a lot of increased difficulty in making them this way, like lag being more of a factor in combat and dealing with big battles.

  • Yea I agree with ya Ben Jii. But DF has put faith in me that if a little company can do it, surely large ones can also. And with Hardware/software technically getting better, this is a good time for games.

And remembering WWII online was doing this a few years back. The game had it’s own issues, but looking back knowing what we know now, they did a remarkable job for a Huge world war with collision detection in units and ranged fire.
