ThunderCats … MMO!!!

If you haven’t been watching the Cartoon Network series ThunderCats you’re missing out.  It’s a re-imagining of the 1985 cartoon where the characters are not quite the same as you remember (or don’t, if you were too young or missed the awesome original) and the setting has changes a bit.

Instead of being in a spaceship with lots of technology at the beginning, this new series has the ThunderCats living a more medieval existence where technology is something only theorized about in the Kingdom of Thundera.  When Mumm-Ra and his reptile army attack, the ThunderCats are all but destroyed and are left with just a few (the key characters) to look for the key artifacts that the series seems based around. Anyway, that’s just a quick plot synopsis.

What I’m really getting at here is the potential for ThunderCats to be a MMO.  The racial divide between the cats and reptiles as well as other fantasy creaturess is already built into the IP.  The new series has a great setting on a world that is geographically diverse. The various races provide different styles as well with the reptiles being more technologically sophisticated because of Mumm-Ra’s help but the Cats have to rely on other skills like their natural agility and ferocity.

Classes could easily be devised from all known characters and sub-races could be chosen.  Cats could be Lions/Tigers/Cheetahs (which each have innate abilities that the characters show off) or smaller, perhaps crafty and resourceful, like Wilykit & Wilykat. Weapon choices and special abilities are all there. Lots of character descriptions here.

Maybe I’m a total dweeb, but I can’t be the only one who has given thought to the idea!

  • Worse concepts have been attempted, but the two faction PVE MMO model needs to die. The reality is that everyone is going to raid the same dungeons and kill the same mobs because the devs can’t afford to have players miss half of the content. Meanwhile, the lack of a third faction reduces non-instance PVP to a numbers game. As long as this is the model, there is zero benefit to telling players that they don’t get to play with half of their comrades.

  • Well it wouldn’t have to be two factions. 😛 The 2011 cartoon has already introduced new groups. 90% would be ThunderCats anyway. 😉

  • You are a dweeb but that’s the nature of our hobbies and interests. Nothing wrong with that, and never any need to apologize. I personally dont like this new angsty teen Lion’O. I had enough of that back in the late 80s Marvel X-Books. I only saw 2 episodes so maybe I’m judging harsh.

I’m still waiting for a damn Mech Warrior MMO. (grumble….)

  • Yeah I would love a Thundercats MMO. In the new TV show there aren’t just Cats and Reptiles, their are all other sorts of animals as well. You could actually do, Cats, Dogs and Lizards if you wanted to do at least a three factions, all vying for control of Thundera.

Cats = Lions, Tigers, Panthers and Cheetahs
Dogs = Hyena, Wolf, Fox and Jackal
Lizard = Chameleon, Gila Monster, Iguana and Gecko

    Yeah that could definitely work.

  • I dunno If you’re into Anime, but I have thought long and hard and the Best Anime IP to be an MMOrpg would be Naruto,(anime about Ninja’s) there are 5 different Countries and a Ninja Village from each country to start off with. Also there are BLoodline Limits, which are basically special characteistics and abilities that follow along a families BloodLine, these will also be chosing at character creation.

There are 3 different Ability types Taijutsu(Pure Physical Combat-Think Weapon Styles from Daoc), Ninjutsu(Physical Techniques and Special Abilities-Think Spells) and Genjutsu(Techniques that alter your Mind-Think Crowd Control). These techniques each have a unique flavour depending on a characters innate affinity to a nature element (also chosen at character creation)like Fire,Water,Earth,Lightning and Wind, these would be be the basic foundations of skills.

Very High level Techniques can be combined with different Nature types to create either new Elements(like Earth and Water make Wood) and very powerful abilities.I mean just think about the skill tree possibilities! I know it would be very hard to balance, but damn if some one could get it right!

You wouldn’t select “Classes” as such but you would belong to a specific archetype depending on the techniques, nature affinity, abilities and bloodline you choose to progress.

To perform these techniques and abilities you cast hand seals(think -Casting Time)
let the player combine the seals to perform the jutsu.
more seals means a stronger jutsu. this would mean that the player needs to practice to pull of a strong jutsu. and the player can get interrupted while trying to pull it off.

Anyway I’ve rambled on too much, The world created in the Naruto Manga/Anime is just so perfect for an MMORPG its ridiculous.

  • I agree. There should be a Thundercats mmorpg. We could pick our Race,sub-race,clothes,customise height, muscles, and other body features, weapons from futuristic guns to powerful swords.
