(Rumor) Nintendo unveiling new ‘hardcore’ console

News of Nintendo’s new console is circulating and we wanted to make sure you guys were aware. Nintendo is rumored to be announcing this new console sometime before or at E3. The new console will be “more powerful than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360”, have “HD resolutions”, and be backwards compatible with the Wii.

Nintendo has given us little reason to own a Wii lately. Their demographic, while profitable, ignores the crowd that truly helped them pioneer a big chunk of console gaming. It is definitely long overdue for Nintendo to make a move back into the spotlight and create a console aimed directly at the hardcore and ‘core gamer’ crowd.

We sure hope the rumor is true for a late 2012 launch.

  • Shouldn’t they aim a little higher than more powerful than Xbox 360 and PS3? Perhaps try to make it at least as powerful as a top end gaming PC?

  • I can totally see Nintendo releasing a more powerful and HD ready console but I would be suprised it was aimed at hardcore gamers like the PS3 or XBox. They’ve made a huge success out of selling cheaper systems aimed directly at families and younger kids so it would be a real turn around in their policy if they tried to compete with Sony and Microsoft on that playing field.

Guess we’ll just need to wait and see 🙂

  • I don’t think Nintendo will ever pull off a “hardcore” console. Now, that’s not to say they couldn’t pull off a high-end one. They’ve never been known for consoles that were truly for hardcore gamers. I don’t seem them refocusing that effort anytime soon. Nintendo has almost always been synonymous with family friendly.

  • When the SNES was in its prime, those playing were the hardcore gamers. When the Nintendo 64 was in its prime, those playing were considered the hardcore gamers.

Hardcore doesn’t mean the people playing Gears of War.

  • A new Nintendo system would be great, I have not played a Wii game since 2008. I think my Smash Bros. disc is still in there.

  • Two weeks late, imo.

Whoever the fanboy was who dreamed this up, they made it just a bit too perfect a fantasy to be plausible.

  • I hope this is true. I think it makes sence actually also with it being backwards compatible, they can retain some of the crowd they attracted with the Wii .

I sure do miss the SNES days being 39 years old now I find myself looking back quite often and of course the good ol Atari 2600 hehe.

Also something else to chew on, if the rumor is true, you can bet Microsoft and Sony are going to release another console as well.

  • Does using it to watch Netflix count? Unless it is a holodeck they are still aiming to low!

  • So they’ll have a system aimed at “hardcore gamers,” will they also option the titles that are aimed at that demographic as well or are we going to see another round of DDRs, Mario Parties, and Family Oriented games?

It can’t be that hard to option games like Eternal Dark again.

On a side note, I’d like my Mario back on terra firma and picking up a fire flower wouldn’t be a bad thing either.

  • Smart choice.

The Wii crowd are not really the type of people who buy a new system just for shiny graphics. They are all pretty content with the Wii in its current form.

So Nintendo can continue to sell the Wii for even cheaper and make it casual. Even upgrade it with netflix and what not.

I think it was a smart choice.

  • I for one hope they don’t try for a Hardcore console. *hides from the anger of the interwebs* Though I’d be fine with better hardware.

If Nintendo tries to dip into that arena again, they will have to compete head on against Sony and Microsoft. And they can’t. Flat out. Full stop. Can. Not.

Currently? They stand out. No one is confusing the Wii for the Xbox or Playstation. They’ve got their own games, their own style, and their own brand.

  • I’m fine with an identity, but they’ve neglected their original core audience. They took quantity over quality, shovelware over 1st party titles, and money over soul.

Their core IP’s suffered from their gimmicky controls and lack of hardware. I see them being able to continue with their Wii line while still wising up.

  • The problem is XBox has built a very strong gaming community, that is probably the major reason why it has continued to do so well when the most popular games are launching on both the PS3 and the 360. I bought a PS3 for FFXIII and the Blu-Ray player… now I’m looking to trade it for a 360. Graphically there is no reason to switch; just everyone plays on Xbox Live. You could say it’s popular for the same reason WoW is popular, if you want to play with the most people you have to go there.

Nintendo will have a very hard time breaking into the market now, especially with the Kinect doing so well. The Wii established its self as a “girls” system because Moms and wives who didn’t game liked it. Now the Kinect it taking that market with the Kinect and most hardcore gamers already have an Xbox. I agree with what someone else wrote, short of a holodeck I don’t think Nintendo can take back the hardcore gamers. They need an amazing platform and some amazing exclusive titles.
