Experimenting with Google Wave

Google’s latest toy is Google Wave.  It’s entirely too complicated to try and explain.  There’s a very long video about it but if you’re like me you’ll end up closing it after five minutes wondering what the heck you just watched, bang your head against the keyboard, and then just fiddle with the thing until you get it working.  Who needs instructions?!

For simplicity’s sake, it’s like one big blog/forum post/document/email/im that anyone participating in can edit or contribute to.  You can simply type in it or you can add gadgets and all sorts of toys from Google.   I think Wave has tons of untapped potential and probably does waaaaay more than I even know about, but even in its most basic form it’s a really cool tool for communicating with people.  It’s still in an early stage and I’ve found half a dozen bugs already, but it’s a nifty little tool/toy to play around with.

To get things going, the Keen and Graev Community has started up a MMORPG Wave.  We’ve made it public so that anyone can see it and anyone con contribute.  The goal here is to see how successful this Wave becomes and how useful it will be to a group of people with a common interest — in this case, MMORPG’s.   We’ve set up the wave and created sections for a couple of MMO’s.  The goal is to keep it organized and simple and allow people to just discuss stuff in real time.  Oh yeah, it’s completely in real time and you can see people type every letter at a time.

I may use it to give out some of my Allods Online beta keys and I’ll also be on there talking with people.  Head over to the Wave  by searching “with:public Keen and Graev” and it should come up as “The MMO Tavern” (We’re still in the naming process).  You can also try this direct link here.

If you have any questions about how to access it, or need an invite to Google Wave, feel free to ask.  Since there will probably be a bunch of people asking for invites, please share the love!  Once you get an invite you’ll have 8 invites of your own.  Come back and give out a couple to return the favor.

  • id like an invite also. Can you see the email i put down to post here or do i need to put one down in the comments?

  • ok submited the invites. It takes a while for google to approve them or something I don’t know exactly.

@douhs I can see the others I doin’t see yours. Just let me know your e-mail

  • I saw this google ewave in the dec issue of pop sci, good way to collaborate as well with people on projects.

  • Yeah it would be a good tool for the most part for a PnP style game. That is of course if the tools have been developed for the dice rolling.

Almost makes me want to go and get my 2e/3e books out and see if there’s any interest out there.. 😉

  • I would be interested in D&D or any other PnP game, definitely. Even simple collaborative storytelling would be fun.

I started up an MMO Design wave and posted a link in the K&G MMO Tavern.

  • This certainly looks very interesting. I’d love an invite, if anyone still has one to spare 🙂 spunos at gmail dot com.

  • Sent you an invite Engrey.

My scheme to get more invites through dummy accounts is working well. I encourage all of you, now that you have 8 invites, to invite your friends and anyone here that wants one.

  • Hey guys,

If someone has one, would love to receive an invite for the Wave… (frenchmtl at gmail dot com).

    Thanks,

    Erli.

  • If there is an invite left, I’d love to join the fun 🙂

    Thanks guys!

  • I’d love to join to. Can anyone send an invite my way? steelserpent at g.m.a.i.l. Thanks!

  • Douhs, Stoico, Satoraum and Steeldragoon : I sent you invite to the Wave… You should receive an email from google in a few hours.

By the way am I the only one to find the MMO Tavern Wave hard to follow ? I suppose I am missing something because right now performance is horrible (scrolling the wave takes forever) and I got difficulties seeing which posts are unread and which one are read. Any advice ?

  • Thats the problem with wave at the moment. Laggy performance.

You can use spacebar to scroll through all the new posts. That’s the only way I can keep track of it. Makes it easier.

  • Hi Keen,

I need an invite please. But wouldn’t want to show my mail here publicly.
So if you can do that favor to me and invite – u can find it hidden in the mail address of this message.

    Thanks.

  • @ixobelle, @Duzero, @Obituary – Sent invites. Google says “People you’ve nominated” so apparently nothing sent yet, but you’re on the list to get it.
