Metachat: The little chatroom that could

metachatThe good people of Areae, lead by Master Raph Koster himself, launched a little piece of Metaplace by way of Myspace today. This little piece is… let me just cut and paste the spiel from their official site:

“It’s just a simple chat app, with movie playing, soccer balls to kick around, and some other features. It only uses a fraction of what Metaplace can do, but it’s a start.”

Some of the ‘other features’ included:

  • Avatar representation (myspace picture) with movement (or sliding) capabilities via a flash interface
  • Throwing Tomatoes, Snowballs, exclamation/question marks, happy faces, peace signs, and other… odd.. chatroomy stuff
  • Stock quotes, weather, and a translator using some RSS integration
  • Youtube integration to share videos (I faithfully spread the word of Warhammer Online while there!)
  • Myspace profile integration because it’s, well, Myspace

I’m not a chatroom fan. I think they are a complete waste of time. But hey, I play video games all day so I don’t have much room to talk. While I didn’t find much pizazz in it being a glorified chatroom, I was very pleased to see the youtube and myspace integration working so well. There were a few bugs (especially with the Youtube plugin) but for the most part it worked. It makes me very eager to see what I’ll be able to do with my personal “Metaplace”.

So whether this is the start of a social networking revolution or nothing more than a soccer chatroom with tomatoes remains to be seen. The potential is definitely there *kiss of death* (j/k) but I need to see more; and I want to see more. I’m not going to stop until I have a little Metaplace village of my own where I can repress the citizens of Keen’s Place at my leisure – and ‘invite my friends to join me LIVE!’ It’s only a matter of time.
