Guild Personalities and Me

I never take much stock in these personality or preference tests, however GuildCafe has always been absolutely spot on with theirs… it’s so weird. I took this test for the heck of it this morning and discovered that it’s now a great tool for providing me the exact description of a guild I’m looking for in WAR or the ‘next game’.

Colorful-Disciplined

The two attributes of your guild personality test indicate which players and guilds you would be most comfortable with, as well as what type of players you would prefer to recruit to your own groups. The two attributes of your result are:

– Colorful indicates players and guilds who prefer an environment where *excessive* strong language and discussion of adult subjects are discouraged, but the occasional double entendre or ribald reference is still appreciated.
– Disciplined players and guilds do not take their gaming too seriously, but like it when everyone at least makes an effort to try to succeed.

It’s very true that I do not look for guilds that take themselves so seriously that they degrade the fun factor of the game. I also don’t want a guild that considers itself so lax in the rules department that every other player is a class clown – it gets old fast. To be quite honest I am trying to decide if I even want a guild in Warhammer Online. Every time I join a guild I feel as though I don’t click well with some of the other players or their way of doing things seems uncomfortable. Yet when I am not in a guild I still long for one. Since WAR will be my next real ‘home’ it would be best for me to discover what I truly want now, instead of allowing opportunities to pass me by.

I welcome any advice on the matter. Are guilds truly important in a game like Warhammer Online? It seems much of the Tome of Knowledge revolves around guild accomplishment. I don’t want to deprive myself of the lasting appeal having a guild adds to a game, nor do I want to hurt or jade my gaming experience by joining a guild that I grow to regret. It’s a wonder I get any sleep at night. To my readers: Do you have a guild? If you do, why are you in that particular guild? If you don’t, why aren’t you in one? Right now the path I will take leads me without a guild yet still looking for friendships that might forge their way into a guild or group of like-minded players. Back in Dark Age of Camelot it took some time for me to finally join a guild. Up until I joined I was merely a friend to many members and often included in guild activities. With much pondering and a little luck I just might figure out what the heck I’m going to do. Hey, at least I have a few months still to think about it.

If you haven’t already done so I strongly encourage you to take this MMORPG Guild Personality Test.

  • I had the same response to the quiz- I want to be able to cut up and I don’t want a second career, but if you aren’t going to make progress what’s the point in playing? As far as guilds are concerned, in my experience the first few months of any game are extremely chaotic as guilds form and break up due to people leveling at different speeds or just general personality conflicts. I despise pick-up groups so I usually try to find some sort of guild ASAP. However, pick up groups in DAoC were generally a lot better than those in WoW, so it will be interesting to see how WAR goes.

  • I scored Colorful-Disciplined as well.

I’ve only joined a guild a couple times, but I don’t plan on joining a guild in WAR. You don’t have to be guilded to make friends in the game who you can chat with and group with from time to time. And without a guild you don’t get into the situation where my friends have to like your friends.

Guilds add a lot of expectations that I’d rather not deal with. I don’t like planning when I’ll play a game and I don’t like planning what I’ll do in a game. One of the big benefits of an open-world game like an MMO is that you can follow your whims.

Anyway, I enjoy guilds that are mainly social. But most guilds are more achievement-oriented, and I’d rather not turn my game into a work environment.

  • I wonder if you’re building WAR up to a level it cannot match, and no game ever could. As far as I can tell, the game will essentially be “WoW meets DAoC”, and I guess how much someone would like it would probably be based on how much they liked those other games.

Now, the person who played DAoC for years and only left it reluctantly to go play WoW (but longed for the days of DAoC) — I would expect them to love WAR.

The hype surrounding WAR, though, reminds me of the hype surrounding Vanguard right until it hit public beta.

As far as guilds go, I join because I want to meet new friends, see everything the game has to offer, help people with quests and kill the big stuff.

Most raiding guilds I’ve joined have the few people who constantly describe revolting acts or attitudes (severe racism, for instance) that force me to log out of chat or /ignore them on occasion. I’ve been in two guilds that forbade that kind of talk entirely, but most seem to feel that to be hardcore, you need at least some people who are racist, foul-mouthed idiots. This more than anything turned me off of raiding in WoW (and may do the same in EQ2).

I am POSITIVE these same people will infect WAR. It’s precisely the sort of game they enjoy.

So the question is, will you enjoy your WAR guild as much when the racist idiots start spouting off?

  • I played DAOC for years and reluctantly quit, which is why WAR is so big in my mind. I don’t see that much of WoW in WAR though, at least the part I am personally going to be playing. I won’t be playing WAR for the PvE content in any way. I will be completely playing WAR from an RVR approach. The need for a guild in my situation causes much consideration.

  • In my opinion, any sort of objective based RvR will be greatly enhanced with a regular crew you can roll with. Back pre-ToA when I played DAoC, there was a Mid-Lance guild called Lagged Again that only had 8 members and played a 6 tank/1 healer/1 shaman group back when PBAOE casters were all the rage. They kicked all forms of ass (and I just Googled that there are a number of videos of them out there). While I’ll never be that hardcore, the idea of having a quality team for RvR is very appealing to me.

  • Agreed. I can see a team being extremely appealing. Small scale guilds that work together, know each other very well, and all mesh are where it’s at.

  • I think that Coloful-Discplined is just the very middle-road option. It’s the average. To me it seems like this would encompass probably the majority of people out there.
