E3 2017 Game Lists

The conferences and main showings of E3 2017 are now behind us. Most years I create a new blog post for each of the conferences and discuss my thoughts on them. This year I want to do something a little bit different.

I'm combining all of the games showed at the E3 conferences into one mega post. This single post will contain lists of all the games discussed at E3, videos (where available), my comments/thoughts, and relevant news.

I created an in-post navigation here for you to use to quickly jump to the section that interests you most.

NOTE: The games are organized by which conference showed or announced them. Many of these games are multi-platform.

Note 2: I'm skipping the sports games, car games, and uber obscure indie titles.

Microsoft E3 2017 Games List

I feel like Xbox had the weakest conference of the big 3. For some reason I see people all over saying their conference was a solid showing this year, but overall I felt it lacking.

Xbox One X

I chuckled when I saw the name. It reminds me of an AOL screen name. XboxOneX. I'm not keen on spending $500 on a console that's only a better version of a console I feel like I barely use. I haven't touched my Xbox One in maaaaany months. Why? Uh, hello? Games? Anyone?

Metro Exodus

I never played the first two Metro games, but this one has me rethinking that decision. Metro Exodus looks like it may have open-world potential. I'm not sure I can get past the intensity and the horror-ish setting, though.

Assassin's Creed Origins

I'm not giving Microsoft even an ounce of credit for this multi-platform title, but they did give us our first real look at Assassin's Creed Origins. I think it looks AMAZING. I'm a huge AC fan, so this is on the tip top of my of list.

Deep Rock Galactic

Dwarves digging holes? Heck yeah, we're in.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds

PUBG makes its console debut on the Xbox One. I really enjoy the game on PC, although it has some intense optimization and clunkiness issues. If the engine can be refined, Graev and I will absolutely jump into this together.

State of Decay 2

I haven't seen any news on how State of Decay 2 is really going to differ from the original. I'm so burned out on Zombie games.

Minecraft 4k & Full Cross-Platform Multiplayer

I had to message Graev to make sure I heard this right. I thought Minecraft was already cross-platform since I've been playing on my PC with the tablet version already. I guess this allows consoles to now play too. That's neat. Email me when you allow mods.

Dragon Ball FighterZ

Lots of excitement over Dragon Ball FighterZ, but I'm not into fighting games. I suck at them, therefore they aren't any fun. I love the visuals, though.

The Darwin Project

I think this looks like tons of fun. The Darwin Project is like a cartoonish competitive survival game. The video above, although full of shoutcasting cringe, looks fun.

Ashen

I watched a video segment of the Ashen developers being interviewed, and I think their explanation of the game makes it sound way more fun than the videos. It's an action RPG in a world of darkness. You have "passive multiplayer" functionality, but one of the devs mentioned seamlessly coming across friends to play with in the world and something about leading people back to your camp to keep them as friends? No clue what any of that means, but I find it intriguing.

Life is Strange: Before the Storm

Life is Strange... is strange. Not my thing.

Super Lucky's Tale

Super Lucky's Tail is a continuation of the Oculus exclusive "Lucky's Tail". From what I can tell, this version is 4k and not a VR game. It's releasing on PC and Xbox One as a "play anywhere" title. This looks super cute and right up my alley. I love the visuals.

Sea of Thieves

Here we go! Sea of Thieves is back for another E3 and we finally have a "release date" of "Early 2018" ... grumble. Looks AMAZING. The walkthrough shows underwater gameplay! I simply can't wait for this to come out.

Crackdown 3

Looks absolutely horrible. I remember playing the first and thought "This is kinda dumb." How they ever made it to three boggles the mind. But hey, Terry Crews.

Shadow of War

Shadow of War follows up Shadows of Mordor, currently sitting on top of my backlog. I'm evening more excited to play Mordor now to be ready for Shadow of War. Nice to see it coming this year.

Anthem

Anthem is EA's (made by Bioware, whatever that means anymore) response to Destiny 2. Gotta say... it looks cooler than Destiny 2. Looks like an open-world-ish experience similar to how Destiny handles things -- maybe even more open. I like what I see of the setting. Unless Destiny 2 and Anthem release very far apart, I'll be choosing Anthem.

EA E3 2017 Games List

Although they showed Star Wars, EA probably had the worst of all the showings at E3 this year. The entire presentation was a snoozefest with the Sports titles. We really felt like we were being hold hostage by the promise of Battlefront footage at the end.

Star Wars Battlefront 2

Lucky for EA, they're still able to ruin pimp the Star Wars franchise. Battlefront 2 looks way, way better than Battlefront 1, but I don't want to get too excited -- it doesn't take much to beat the atrocity of the original (which is a reboot... but still). EA showed a ton of footage (which was good for them) and highlighted how the game was different. Big change I'm happy about: no more stupid tokens.

A Way Out

From the maker of the Brothers game, A Way Out features split-screen gameplay. In fact, Im pretty sure he said it's like forced splitscreen. The game is designed to feature two asynchronous experiences where one player can even be in a cutscene while the other is playing. Really neat concepts at work here. Keeping my eye on it, even though the setting isn't my style.

Battlefield 1: In the Name of the Tsar (and night maps)

Battlefield 1 is one of those games that looks soooo fun when you see it played in trailers or watch other people play. Then you get in and it's slower pace and sorta fizzles out. The new expansion (DLC 2?) looks cool, though. Might reinstall.

Ubisoft E3 2017 Games List

Ubisoft was borderline worse than EA's conference. The only saving grace here was that I didn't feel like they were holding something over my head while I sat through the sports games. Decent showing overall.

Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle

Mario + Rabbids looks like a fun battle game. I'm not sure how much depth is there, and I'm not sure how much I like Rabbids mixing with my beloved Nintendo IP, but I'll keep my eye on it. Hopefully it's not Nintendo being weird yet again.

The Crew 2

I said I wouldn't include car games, but this one has planes and dirt bikes too so I was a little conflicted. I think the flight stuff looks good. I'm really not keen on games that simply involve driving -- or just flying either, I guess.

Skull & Bones

Now we're talking! Skull & Bones looks awesome. The name is sorta stupid and obvious, but looking beyond that I see all of the things I loved about Assassin's Creed Black Flag ship gameplay rolled up into a new pirate name. Hmmm, I wonder who would have recommended they do that?! Oh yeah, me and everyone else who loved Black Flag.

Starlink: Battle for Atlas

Take No Man's Sky, combine it with the Toys-to-Life genre, and you have what I think is Starlink: Battle for Atlas. Conceptually a neat idea, but I don't have the stomach to keep buying more TTL stuff without a strong and lasting appeal behind it. This will be on my radar if for no other reason than the neat Nintendo Switch peripheral.

FarCry 5

Hard to look past the fact that FarCry 5 takes the series to Montana where you shoot hillbillies and run over cows with tractors. Gameplay looks fun, I guess? I probably won't get this for no other reason than it looks... generic -- maybe that's the word. Weird to think that running over cows is now generic.

Beyond Good and Evil 2

I still haven't figured out if this is them trolling, or if it's legit. Either way, we'll check back in 5 years to see their progress.

Sony E3 2017 Games List

Sony did a really nice job this year. As a 'core gamer' I appreciate their focus and emphasis on the games themselves rather than the "here's what we did this year" roundup.  Out of all the conferences, this one had the most games that I could say, "Yep, I'm playing that."

Uncharted: Lost Legacy

The information surrounding Lost Legacy is pretty light right now. Most sites have it mislabeled as DLC, but it turns out it became a standalone title. The story settles around Chloe (a character I grew to like) and Nadine. I'm a fan of the Uncharted series, but without Nathan... we'll see.

Horizon Zero Dawn Expansion: The Frozen Wilds

Horizon Zero Dawn is yet another game on my backlog. The expansion looks awesome, so I think I'll grab the original now -- and it dropped to $39 on on Amazon too.

Days Gone

We first saw Days Gone at least year's E3. Honestly, it just looks a little generic. I'm also over the zombie theme. This will be a skip for me.

Monster Hunter World

At first Graev and I were both thinking that this would be a PS4 exclusive, but it's definitely on Xbox One too. Unfortunately for Nintendo, it doesn't look like they''ll be seeing Monster Hunter World. Still, it looks phenomenal.

Shadow of the Colossus

Looks pretty good. Graev is excited for it and liked the original.

Call of Duty WWII

I was shocked when I read on the CoD blog that this was multiplayer. That looks pretty good, but watching it I had the feeling it felt like there might only be a few players per team in order to make it more cinematic. Then again, it could just be them showcasing it.

God of War

Wow, I'm not much for the overly-violent games but God of War is visually stunning. Both Graev and I will probably pick up God of War.

Detroit Become Human

It's just too heavy handed. The message is being forced down our throats. Looks too much like they're trying to teach me something instead of play a game. Going to skip.

Marvel's Spider-Man

Graev completely lost it when this was showcased. "Finally no more of that Activision crap. Finally a AAA Spider-Man!" Agreed, it looks great. Hopefully it's not too heavy on the QTE.

Nintendo's E3 2017 Game List

I was suuuuuper disappointed in Nintendo this year. For the past few years I have always held their "conferences" in high regard, but they sorta dropped the ball. That's not to say they didn't show nice stuff -- they did. There just weren't any remarkable moments and it felt like one of those "we're working on stuff that we can announce next year" presentations.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2

This is one Graev is excited for because he loves his JRPGs. I guess it looks good as far as JRPGs go?

Kirby

Kirby is a game I'll get. I think it looks like a fun platformer with tons of personality. Love the visuals.

Pokemon RPG Announced

Core Pokemon RPG

This might have been the one "Yay!" moment for me during the Nintendo Spotlight. Gamefreak is making a core Pokemon RPG for the Nintendo Switch... but it's not coming out for over a year. Definitely a let down to hear we have to wait so long. I'm having flash backs of being promised Zelda games and having to wait until the next console.

Metroid 4

Before the Nintendo presentation started, Graev made a comment about them never announcing more Metroid games. Then BAM an announcement that they're working on Metroid 4. We haven't had one since the Wii, so it's about time.

Yoshi Game

Looks like a cute Yoshi game, and it's not a Yarn one. I'll definitely play.

Rocket League

Sweeeeet! I've never played Rocket League and was waiting for a reason to jump in. This will do nicely.

Super Mario Odyssey

Super Mario Odyssey looks soooo good. I think I really like the idea of possessing enemies with Mario's magic hat. There are a few... oddities ... that I'll have to get over, but overall looks solid.

E3 2017 Wrap-up

This year's E3 was FULL of games. I'm very satisfied by the prospects, and we now know that 2017 will finish super strong. 2018 is now staged to be a blockbuster year as well.

Here's my list of this year's winners.

E3 2017 Winners (Big 3)

  1. Sony - They had the most games I would definitely want to play and the most coming out soon. Solid showing.
  2. Nintendo - Plenty of games that look good, but they didn't 'bring it' this year. We got a few nice announcements of things they're working on, but no "woah" moments.
  3. Microsoft - They had a few amazing gems, but their focus is definitely not in the right place for me as a consumer.

Best of Show E3 2017

There were so many good games shown this year that we decided to award our best of show by determining the one game we would like the play the most right away, and a runner-up.

Keen

  1. Sea of Thieves
  2. Super Mario Odyssey
  3. Star Wars Battlefront 2

Graev

  1. Monster Hunter World
  2. Spider-Man
  3. Anthem

Over to You

Who do you think 'won' E3 this year, and what games are topping your 'must play' list? We would love to hear what you have to say.

    • Monster Hunter World is definitely in my top 5 shown. I’m not sure what it is about super hero games, but I can’t seem to get into them as much.

  • I never really liked superhero games but that Spiderman game looks sooo good! Hopefully its really open and we can explore the whole city.

    • I’m curious too if it will have city exploring. Part of me things it will be more of a cinematic game, but you neverk now.

  • MH: Worlds is 100% my top. Finally on a console, finally HD, finally open world. With the release date most likely being roughly a year away, I realize they have probably been working on this awhile but I also thought that this felt like a response to Dauntless coming out.

My other two would probably be Anthem and Sea of Thieves, both look solid and have me excited.

  • My top 3:

    Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle
Xcom 2 War of the Chosen
    Crackdown 3/Sea of Thieves/Anthem

Ok so it’s a top 5, deal with it 🙂

As for who won I’d go
Nintendo – I went from not wanting a switch to needing one
Microsoft – went from wanting a Scorpio to wanting one even more
Sony – still no interest, nothing but setpiece action games to set it apart and those bore me

  • I have to say I have really enjoyed playing Battlefield 1 over the past few months – I don’t play it a lot but it fills a great niche of when you want to spend like an intense hour of gameplay. Not sure your experiences but most of the time I find it very intense and fun to play.

  • Overall, I think E3 this year was a blast to watch. I definitely want a Switch now with all these fun games coming out! I was crossing my fingers for some news/videos of WiLD, but sadly, I did not see anything. However, one must be patient! Some of these games take years and years to make. :)Every time I see a new assassins’ creed come out, I get hyped. I’m in the same boat as you all too with God of War. Holy hell, what an awesome trailer!
