Let it snow!

When I was 10 or 11 years old my Dad’s job took our family from Southern California to Massachusetts.  Up until this time Graev and I did not know what cold was let alone own a pair of long pants.  The year we moved to Haverhill, Mass was the worst snow storm New England had seen (not sure if it was in a long time or ever).  We were ignorant to the conditions and become aware of it when the school principal called our home to let us know we can’t come back to school until we own a pair of pants.  Apparently wearing shorts in 14 degree weather is bad or something.

We adapted and eventually bought ourselves pants and big down-feather winter coats.  The snow was slightly more tolerable when you didn’t turn blue after being outside.

We lived in town homes which are supposedly common back east.  Three or four houses were connected and they were built up 4 or 5 stories high.  I remember we had 3 sets of stairs in our house.  You would enter into a “mud room” – aptly named – and from there you could go in the basement or go up a flight of stairs to our living room/family room combo and the kitchen.  From there you can go upstairs again to the master bedroom and bathroom with a bedroom or office attached.  From there you climb a set of spiral stairs to a loft which doubled as our play room and bedroom.

We lived in Massachusetts for 2 years before our family moved back to Socal.  We’ve been here ever since.  It was a fun… adventure…  But definitely nothing I would like to experience again.  California grown indeed.

Here are a few pictures of us when we were probably 9 and 11.   The one making the snow angel is Graev.  These shots were taken from our back porch.

  • Heh… I grew up in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, moved to California for 23 years and just came back… and the snow is thick and the ice is everywhere and I may never feel warm again 😛
