E3 2018: PC Gaming Show

I had to watch half of the PC Gaming Show while driving over to Graev's where I was able to catch the rest with him. Was this the very first year for this showcase? I liked it. I think fair exposure for PC gaming at E3 is always a plus. The entire event is so skewed towards console games -- not that I personally mind that these days -- that it's nice to see a bit the other direction. I thought Day9 did a nice job hosting.

Read on for our thoughts on specific games shown.

  • Satisfactory - As I was driving on the phone with Graev all he said was, "Okay, you're going to like this one." sure enough, after watching the trailer I can official say I NEED THIS GAME IN MY LIFE! I have to have it. It's basically a FPS factory building sim. You're an engineer on another planet and you have to conquer nature, build massive factories, and automate everything. YES YES YES.
  • gamepad
Neo Cab - What is this? Uber sim?
  • gamepad
Mavericks: Proving Grounds - I don't think we need another game like this.
  • gamepad
Forgotten City - It's like a time travel murder mystery type of game set in a mythological setting. Kinda weird but intriguing.
  • gamepad
Star Control: Origins - I think this looks really neat. Stardock does a pretty good job on their games. Instead of the typical RTS games by Stardock, this one is going to be an ARPG where you get to explore the universe. That's cool.
  • gamepad
Hunt: Showdown - More generic survival post-apoc zombie horror. Skip.
  • gamepad
Maneater - I am terrified of sharks. I live in southern California and I love going to the beach, but I won't step foot in the water. Being the shark is cooler than being eaten by the shark, but this won't help my phobia.
  • gamepad
    Bravery Network - Looks dumb
  • gamepad
Morning Star - At first I was like, "ooooo farming sim!" then I was like, "wtf not a farming sim." It's a post-cyberpunk farming sim where computers are the soil and data are the crops. Just too weird for me. 🙁
  • gamepad
Jurassic Park Evolution - I like the idea of a Jurassic park sim. I've watched a few streams since learning more about the game and it appears a lot more complex than I may want. Looks good, though.
  • gamepad
Stormland - Graev and I are both tired of the "VR Experiences."
  • gamepad
Overwhelm - Not really interested in these types of games, and when they have this aesthetic I'm completely turned off.
  • gamepad
Night Call - Another weird narrative taxi experience. I'm turned off by the aesthetic and presentation.
  • gamepad
Sable - There's cell-shaded and then there's holy cow cell-shaded. I'm not into these types of games.
  • gamepad
Star Citizen - Let me know when it's not still in alpha.
  • gamepad
Genesis Alpha One - I might be interested. The trailer here didn't do the game any favors, but I looked it up and it's a roguelike "on an epic scale" where you get to customize your starship, find new homes for humanity's dna, and other interesting ideas. I'll explore this one further.
  • gamepad
Don't Starve Hamlet - This is an expansion to the game where you find a lost town of pigmen. Unfortunately, it's not multiplayer. I'm only interested in the Don't Starve with multiplayer gameplay.
  • gamepad
    Just Cause 4 - Nope
  • gamepad
The Walking Dead - I just don't need more zombies, and I don't see anything here that would make me excited enough to play this AND Dying Light.
  • gamepad
Noita - Very neat looking visually. It's a roguelike RPG type game. I might look into that more.
  • gamepad
Two Point Hospital - I really like the visual presentation of this one, and the gameplay sounds fun too. You basically design a hospital, cure illnesses, and manage the staff. Very cool idea.
  • gamepad
Ooblets - The trailer sucked and didn't tell me anything I wanted to know about the game. I did more digging and it looks like a farming and creature collecting game. THAT I can get behind. If it's like the trailer with stupid dancing creatures for gameplay, however, I'm out.
  • gamepad
Anno 1800 - NOW we're talking! I couldn't get into the idea of the other Anno game because I just don't like sci-fi city-sim games. This, however, looks freaking legit. The history buff in my really likes this stuff.
  • gamepad
Hitman 2 - I think I might play this one. They abandoned the idea of episodic content. I'll probably bum it off Graev when he's done.
  • gamepad
Telltale's Walking Dead Final Season - I haven't enjoyed them so far, so skipping.

Overall Thoughts on PC Gaming Show

There were some real winners and some real stinkers shown during this show, but that's mostly my personal preferences of not being interested in particular games. In general I think the show was fine.

Overall score: "Fine to Good"

  • While we’re waiting for Satisfactory, have you tried Factorio? As far as I can tell, the former will be like a 3D version of the latter. 🙂

    • Actually I haven’t. Something about being in that first person immersive perspective does a lot more for me than the isometric POV. If you think Factorio will provide the kind of experience I’m looking for… I might have to give it a shot.

  • They’ve been doing the PC show for at least few years now. I think the first was pretty clunky with a weird talk show shtick. They seem to have sorted it out the last year or two by having Day[9] do a more traditional stage MC kind of role.
