E3 2018: Ubisoft Conference

The Ubisoft conference at E3 had quite an interesting showing. Check out our thoughts on the games below.

  • Just Dance 2019 - Just dancin' my way to the next game.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 - Conceptually interesting, but very different from the first which had a lot broader appeal compared to the swearing, sex jokes, and maturity in being shown in this one. Looks like they're going too ambitious with it, and the spirit of the game is probably being lost to overly-indulgent artistry.

The Division 2 - I commented on this yesterday. I can't play the second when the first wasn't very good. I don't see enough that's different here.
  • gamepad
Trials Rising - This was such a stupid presentation for a game that might otherwise be pretty fun. I won't buy it, but if I wanted a game about motorbike stunt tricks I'd pick it up.
  • gamepad
Space Junkies - Neart looking VR tech-demo-experience. Not much lasting appeal as a real game here.
  • gamepad
For Honor - I liked this game a lot for the week or so it lasted for me. I think it was lots of fun, but no staying power. Updates they're making to the game are nice and all, but I won't reinstall.
  • gamepad
    Transference - Oh, sweet Elijah.
  • gamepad
The Crew 2 - Not my thing at all, and I don't think what we watched was real gameplay.
  • gamepad
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle - This was a really cool way to show the game with the live instrumental music onstage. This DLC looks cool.
  • gamepad
Starlink: Battle for Atlas - I think this looks cool conceptually, though I fear Ubisoft missed the toys-to-life memo. You get to pick a pilot, starship, and weapons and build them on the toy to make it all come to life in the game. (This video is really helpful explaining how it all works). I need more details, but it looks like the toys are optional and they can be purchased digitally.

Skull & Bones - This looks AWESOME! Really cool gameplay. It's not really a pirate ship sim where you crew a ship -- it's more like the Assassin's Creed ship sailing where you are your ship when controlling it. Gorgeous visuals. This looks like a killer pirate game! Says its coming in 2019 which sucks because we saw this last E3 too and now we have to keep waiting.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey - WOOT! This is what I want to see. I like that you can choose to play as a male or female. There are now dialogue options! You can also assign / customize control positions for abilities. Combat looks great too. Overall, I'm very pleased with the Greek setting... though I'm not sure how it'll all fit into the storyline. I hope they continue to give us more advancements to the overall story.

Overall Thoughts on Ubisoft

I think they nailed it. They were perfectly Ubisoft in so many ways -- many of which not great -- but really brought three or four solid titles I want to play. Heck, between Starlink, Skull & Bones, and AC I'm more hyped there than from anything Microsoft or Sony showed. That's saying something for Ubisoft.

Overall: "Pretty Good!"

  • Nothing at all appeals to me here. Skull & Bones is purely online PvP right? That’s what I remember from last year. Just make it Black Flag without all the boring Assassin stuff and I’d buy it day one.

I’m not a fan of the Assassin’s Creed series. There’s some really fun parkour and combat there, but it’s just buried in so much unfun narrative, follow missions, and drudgery that I can’t be bothered. The only one I really enjoyed was Black Flag – and even that game lifted you off your amazing pirate ship so you could work in a modern office cubicle where gameplay consisted of pressing the elevator button.

    • I’m one of those weirdos who likes when you get lifted out of the animus to explore the integration of the story with the “real world.” I hope they do a lot more of that in Odyseey, so long as it progresses the main narrative.
