City of Steam Alpha
My character from the City of Steam Alpha.

The City of Steam Closed Beta is currently underway, and we’ve been given another batch of keys to give out to our readers.

If you’re not familiar with City of Steam, I’ve included a quick explanation below.  You can also check out my City of Steam Alpha Tour post that I did back in August.   A common theme that I hear from people is, “It’s better than I expected.”  Now’s your chance to check it out.

About City of Steam
So what is City of Steam? It’s a 3D industrial age fantasy MMORPG. The debut Unity3D-based MMO from Mechanist Games, it transports players to a world where clockworks, steam power, and arcane technologies suffuse every aspect of existence, from the half-organic, half-mechanical dwarves to the giant gears of the World Machine itself.

We’re testing a new giveaway tool.  Simply click ‘Claim your key’ and one will appear for you.

Instructions for redeeming your key can be found after the break.

1. After getting your Beta key, head to the City of Steam website here .

2. Register an account (or sign in if you already have one), copy/paste your Beta Key, click the register/sign-in button, then click on the ‘Play Now’ button and test out City of Steam’s Closed Beta release (or if the test is not yet up, your key will be safely activated and ready for when the game goes live).

3. Enjoy!

The remaining Closed Beta Test will run through 3 periods: Nov. 30-Dec. 4, Dec. 14-18 and Dec. 23-28, starting on Fridays (except for the last test, which runs from Sunday to the following Friday) at 19:00 PST (22:00 EST) and lasting until Tuesdays at 00:00 PST (03:00 EST). Keep your key in a safe place if you’ve received one early. Beta starts soon!

  • dont think its a game for me. I’m taking an MMO break. I wouldnt say I was disapointed about GW2, it was a good game. But now i’m just thinking that the MMO genre as it is now, isn’t for me anymore

  • My most eagerly anticipated MMO for 2013, City of Steam is a game I’ve been doing what little I can to draw attention to since I came across it at the pre-Alpha test last March. It was perfectly playable then but each iteration since has improved it radically.

The first “closed” beta weekend clashed with GW2’s Lost Shores so I didn’t get much time with it but what I did get to see was enormously impressive. It may not be a true MMO – the jury has to be out on that until launch – but whatever it is it’s going to be a top-class online RPG.

  • @Keen, just wanted to let you know that I tested getting a second key after the first, and it wouldn’t let me, said I had already got a key. Good thing. 🙂

  • @Gringar: Hmm. Neither. It’s actually more multiplayer RPG like Neverwinter Nights. Cities are hubs and when you lave them you are instanced out on your own.
