City of Steam Alpha Weekend Key Giveaway

We have another giveaway for you our loyal readers!  We’re giving away 45 City of Steam Keys, graciously provided by Mechanist Games,  for the upcoming alpha weekend events: July 27-29 and August 3-5.

First, for those who have never heard of the game, here’s a quick bit of info.

About City of Steam:
City of Steam, a full-featured, browser-based 3D MMORPG, transports players to an industrial metropolis that has fallen from grace. Emerging from the ashes of ages past, heroes versed in swordplay, divine harmonies, and the arcane arts seek their fortune in a world beset by countless foes, from dangerous factions to mechanical horrors.

From what we can tell, City of Steam blends fantasy and steampunk settings. Classes include everything from sharpshooting Gunners to church hymnal singing Channelers. City of Steam is a Free-to-Play game, and as always we’re hesitant to believe any claim made by any developer that it won’t be pay-to-win, but we’re a sucker for giving everyone a chance to prove the model wrong.

During the upcoming weekend you’ll be able to try the Elves, and the next weekend will be all about the Greenskins (always our favorite). Playable classes will be the Arcanist, Gunner, Warder, and Channeler.

We’ll be giving City of Steam a try for the first time this weekend so we can’t weigh in with our opinions just yet.  We encourage anyone interested in the setting or features of the game, and willing to help test, grab a key and get in there to experience the game.   Look for our followup post with our impressions, and be sure to let us know what you think!

You can find our giveaway widget after the break.

Giveaway Rules
(1) One key per person.
(2) Faked entries will disqualify all of your entries. We’ll know.
(3) Invalid entries or entries we can not verify will not count.
(4) Winners will be notified by email.

Here’s a video with some Alpha footage:

  • I don’t want to promo myself (well I do…) but I’ve been writing a lot about City of Steam on my blog. If anyone wants to read more about it I have three pieces up from the pre-alpha back in March and two about this recent alpha weekend. Here’s a link to the most recent – just follow the tags to the others from there if you’re interested.

(Hope that’s acceptable, Keen – cut the link out if not, of course).

It’s a really interesting, quirky and highly enjoyable game. It’s now calling itself an “online RPG” rather than an MMO but it feels pretty MMO-like when you’re playing it, at least as much as, say, Guild Wars. Strongly recommend giving it a try.

  • Well craaap I had to leave a name and I typed it in before realizing how the rafflecopter thing worked, but oh well, it’s there!

    Sounds interesting!~

  • I was really interested in this until I read about the brower based aspect.

    Not for me, then.

  • I was on the fence whether I should snatch a key from somebody who would probably have more time than me to play during the alpha weekends.

However, it looks as if the widget is broken. At least for me, it stays in the “Loading…” state forever. Not sure whether that’s only me, but just as a heads up.

  • The last browser-based online game I tried was Runequest, years ago, and I can’t say it was a very pleasant experience… but I can always hope to be surprised. 🙂

  • I’ll check it out! The setting sounds interesting, and you can bet I’ll report any bugs I find. 🙂

  • Hey guys, it’s Ethan with Mechanist Games.Great to see the page was launched, thanks again. We received tons of feedback during the first alpha weekend, a list of fixed-bugs will come out very soon. Coupled with more content and new features, the second alpha event will embrace the noble Draug and Riven (read more here: http://www.cityofsteam.com/game-play/races). Also, take a peek into City of Steam alpha test via youtube here: http://youtu.be/aRR6ENSr780. Feel free to drop a line if you have any questions regarding City of Steam.

  • It’s a shame we’ve killed AAA mmorpg’s with our fickle expectations. This one would’ve looked good with some $$$ behind it.

  • I love steampunk, i played Arcanum a lot many years ago it was one of my favorite 2d rpgs and i fell in love with steampunk ever since. Shame not many games use the style but finding this game makes me instantly interested. Consider me as keeping an eye on this one 🙂

  • Update: Just over 5 hours until the giveaway closes. Winners will be emailed early tomorrow morning and posted here in the widget. The weekend alpha event does not begin until 7pm PDT tomorrow night.

  • The graphics style reminds me of Dungeon Siege, and even though it’s in the browser, the Unity plugin seems pretty solid.

  • Congratulations to all of our winners. You have been contacted by email. Instructions for redeeming your keys can be found in the original entry below the giveaway widget.

We’re always looking for ways to improve our giveaways. We’re not happy with how Rafflecopter performs due to redundant entries, forged entries, and the manner in which we must automatically email and distribute keys. If anyone has suggestions or an improved method/tool that can help us our for future giveaways please let us know!

  • I ended up winning two keys, i’m only going to use one so here’s the second one to whoever gets it first (i know its not fair but only way i could think of of giving it away here):

    Good luck!

  • Just wanted to leave a note that I use the key Exelion put up. I had entered but did not win. Thanks man
