Countdown to Skyrim

Dear  Everyone,

If you can not find me this weekend, this is why:

Anyone else going to be completely immersed in Skyrim?  My roommate has already given notice that we should not worry if strange smells come from his room because he won’t be surfacing for three days.  While I’m never that extreme, I do have plans to play the heck out of this game.

On the top of my list of to-do list, since I already have cases of Diet Coke ready, is to figure out what kind of character I want to play first.  I can already tell I’m going to spend at least an hour in the creation process.  I’m going back and forth between playing a viking-like barbarian with shield and 1her or a more stealthy archer.

It’s interesting… There’s a feeling that comes about every couple of years when you know a game will make lasting impressions on the industry and players will talk about the game for years.  These are the moments I relish.   There are only a handful of companies that have ever been able capture said phenomena, and Bethesda is certainly one.  I do hope that Skyrim is one of those games.

STEAM tells me, “This game will unlock in approximately 1 day and 7 hours.”  The world feels at a standstill.

  • Hmm, I picked up Oblivion in a Steam sale a few months back and haven’t got around to playing it yet. I should probably do that if Skyrim is only a day away, haha.

I did spend a lot of hours in Morrowind back when it was new, despite all the crashes.

  • I’m totally there with you Keen. I plan on getting completely lost. Right now Im leaning towards a bard type. Stealth, archer some illusion.

  • I have a feeling Skyrim will slip into the top 5 RPGs all-time for me:

    Ultima 7
    BG 2
    Skyrim
    DA:O
    Bard’s Tale I

  • @Keen: hey man- are you planning on getting PC or a console version, or it doesn’t matter to you? If it does, would love to hear your reasoning.

  • I guess I should have picked up on the STEAM comment. Still interested in hearing you reasons for the preference of PC version over Xbox.

  • I got it on PC, Graev got it on Xbox. I prefer PC controls and Graev prefers his controller and the couch. PC mod support is big for some people but it did not affect my decision.

  • I absolutely hated Morrowind as it required modding to make it playable (I remember the endless attacks by stupid bat/bird things), the graphics were awful and I seemingly broke the main plot early on.

Oblivion I just never got around to playing and I have friends who still tell me how broken THAT game is and how much modding is required there. They still love it though and 2 of them play it to this day.

Despite that history I’m very excited to hear from Amazon that my Skyrim order was posted yesterday. Should have it Thursday and certainly Friday.

I don’t know much about it really, I’m just going to dive in and see how it goes.

Alas I’m out Friday night and all Saturday so I might not get much time on it until Sunday. Ah well 🙂

  • I thought Oblivion was decent, but something always just felt… awkward about the game. That said….

I absolutely can’t wait for Skyrim. This game looks incredible. I prefer playing 3rd person, and the awkardness from the 3rd person view in Oblivion appears to be gone. Throw in dragons… great graphics, a world that looks so beautiful and immersive, and literally ENDLESS quests… and you have the GOTY winner.

On that note… I was (un)fortunate enough to receive a beta invite to SWTOR for this weekend. Talk about terrible timing Bioware.

  • My only regret is that my birthday was last week, and I used my paid vacation to spend time with my family instead of this week. I just looked at my schedule and I close on Friday, open on Saturday, open on Sunday, and then school Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday…

    FFFFFF…

But no, in all seriousness, looking forward to a similarly magical experience in Skyrim as I did in Oblivion. Both figuratively and literally. I tend to blend magic, stealth, and archery together.

  • Damn SWToR for giving me a weekend pass the very weekend that Skyrim comes out.

    *shakes fist*

I’ll probably wait till tuesday/wednesday to play Skyrim though.

  • I have a post scheduled to go live in a couple of hours. SWTOR or Skyrim? Read it if you can’t decide what to do.

  • Looking forward to grabbing the game and my free mug from pre-ordering a physical copy here in the Philippines. 🙂

If it’s a bug-ridden mess though, no Dragonborn is gonna save Bethesda from my wrath! LOL

  • iLkRehp says:

“I have a feeling Skyrim will slip into the top 5 RPGs all-time for me:

    Ultima 7
    BG 2
    Skyrim
    DA:O
    Bard’s Tale I”

Uhm, DA:O was good, but not as good as those, sorry. Besides, you missed the RPG that outshines everything on that list of yours: Planescape: Torment.

  • And I have Skyrim in my hands but it won’t even let me install it until midnight (presumably).

I’d prefer to have it installed now but unlaunchable than to have to start the process in the depths of the night! Ah well, 7 hours to go unless the launch date is some US time then I can add 5-8 hours to that 🙁

  • im really excited as well been a long time waiting for the release of this game.in 43 minutes we can all get ready for 5 hour energy drinks and long Skyrim marathons in the upcoming days

  • I am kind of angry. Currently working in Japan and steam will not unlock it till december 8th. Going to see if i can find a way to buy it from steam earlier.

  • “I have a feeling Skyrim will slip into the top 5 RPGs all-time for me:

    Ultima 7
    BG 2
    Skyrim
    DA:O
    Bard’s Tale I”

I’m amazed that some people (old farts? :)) still put Ultima 7 on the top of all computer RPGs of all times, just like me. I’d put Ultima 4 instead of DA:O though.

  • I preferred Chrono Trigger and the Dragon Quest series for my RPG fix. I confess, however, that I have never played Ultima 7. After reading the posts here, I feel I need to give it a try, after all, graphics are not everything.

  • I’ve been playing Skyrim today btw… am I the only one who was like “omg, but this is Edoras(*)!” about the first town you meet after leaving the intro area (Whiterun) ?

(*)Edoras, capital of Rohan in Lord of the Rings
