KINGSLAYER!

The Lich King has fallen!

The Lich King has fallen. Happy Fun Guyz prevail!

Happy Fun Guyz took down the Lich King tonight in a terrific battle.  We extended our lockout from last week and decided to give him two solid nights.  Last night we got him to 23% (only 13% from winning since you need to get him to 10%) and ended up calling it.  We came back tonight and wiped three times (once was a freak accident) and then came through at the last second.

Phase one went perfectly.  We did our first transition and the horrors died instantly.  We took out the raging spirits quickly with focus fire then transitioned into phase two with only one spirit up.  We dodged all of our defiles and downed that raging spirit quickly.  Graev was almost swept off the edge by a valk who grabbed him but we pulled him back at the last second to save him.

Transition two was a bit shaky. Defile had us spread out big time and we had to adjust our strategy on the fly with a quick call for a relocation of the raid to the side instead of near where we originally tanked and gathered.  Everyone adjusted and we managed to quickly down our raging spirits.  Transitioning into phase three was sketchy.  Right as we got into phase three one of the raging spirits smacked a healer and we struggled to keep up on heals.

The ghosts (as we call them) started to swarm around and our DPS focus fired the first of them out of the sky with enough time to switch to the raging spirit still alive.  Quickly switching back to the Lich King we were split a bit by a Defile that ticked up once and grew.  A healer ankh brought us back into the game but we had ghosts exploding everywhere.  Two DPS went down and a heals.  Combat rezzes went out and we were frantically trying to keep up with heals.

Arthas sent one of our two alive healers into Frostmourne and we were desperately popping cooldowns to survive.  We had four people down now and it was a struggle for survival.  “POPPING COOLDOWNS!” and “Defile on you, move!” went out into vent and everyone played their heart out.  18%… 16%… 13%… 11%.. “Hang in there!!!”

Then we all died.

It was the sweetest death ever as the roleplay began and the Lich King prepared to raise us as his undead slaves.  Not today Arthas!  We were revived by Tirion who finally decided it was time to bubble out of his ice cube and the Lich King was held firmly in place.  “LUST IT UP GRUZ!” The cheers were epic and we brought Arthas down and got to see our achievement spam and cutscene.

Completing the content of this expansion felt so good.  I accomplished my goal and I did it with my guildmates. I’m very proud of how well we did. Onward to Cataclysm guys!

  • Graev is a warlock right? warlocks can keep their demon circle out and then even if they do get tossed over the edge they can teleport back to the safety of the circle.

I think there is even a tactic that involves not wasting dps to save the warlocks, they can save themselves and a valk is wasting all the time it takes to carry them.

  • Nice job Keen, not sure if I will ever even see ICC before the expansion. Still got 4 more levels before I hit 80.

  • @Gringar: Oh that’s awesome. Thanks for the tip!

@Thomas: What’s nice about the ICC buff being up to 30% now is even the casuals can see the content. Hang in there and if you really try to gear up at 80 you can definitely have as good a chance as ever to do it.

  • Grats!

Now that you’ve beaten all of the WotLK content, what are your thoughts on the raiding treadmill? Do you think Cataclysm will be a disappointment because of the gear reset? I know you felt vehemently about the treadmill circa AoC’s launch, I’d like to know how your feelings on that have evolved.

  • Congratulations!

I think I’m done with WoW. The “you’ll be back” bug hasn’t effected me for a long time now. But it’s great to see this standard setting MMO is still going strong and people are enjoying it.

  • I’m not a fan of the gear treadmill at all. At the same time, I feel like I can raid in WoW but not worry about it.

I’ve managed to kill the Lich King without really worrying about having ANYWHERE near the best gear. Sure, I killed him on 10-man normal mode with a 30% buff but I still killed him. I still saw the content.

What’s nice about Cataclysm is that it’s taking 10-man dungeons and making them drop the SAME 100% exact same loot at 25-mans. This means that I won’t have to worry -at all- about getting inferior loot just because I play with less people.

A great reset is a good thing in my eyes. Towards the end of an expansion things start to get out of control. We’ve had FOUR major raids this expansion. It’s time for a reset.

I enjoy gearing up in dungeons (not raids) and look forward to the fun there.

We’ll just have to see how Cataclysm’s treadmill compares and hopefully I’ll be able to avoid it like I have in WotLK. 🙂

  • Well done. You are justifiably proud of getting a LK kill more or less with a reroll guild.

  • Grats HFG! As someone who has been playing since vanilla and never seen a raid I envy your ability to get a good group of people together and really experience the content.

  • Well done Keen and company! 😀

My 10-man group got the Lich King down just last Sunday and it was an amazing experience. We even managed to have everyone alive at the point where he kills us all. Defile is such a bitch but we managed to find a way that really worked for us.

Man, it’s such an accomplishment, even now.

  • Gratz! The first kill of him after wiping for days, weeks, or months is a great feeling. Epic win for sure if it’s done with friends and people that haven’t killed him before. Just a tip for future kills, dk army of the dead can be placed under the vile spirits in phase 3 and aggro all of them, then you just send your OT in to blow them up. Also kiting LK to the opposite side they spawn on and not dpsing them at all works wonders too.
