MAG

For anyone who doesn’t know, MAG is an online-only PS3 first person shooter where you can play with up to 255 other people.

I’ve been playing for the past few days and so far I’m really enjoying it. I joined the SVER faction, the others being Valor and Raven, and have raised my character to around level 18 or so.

Surprisingly there seems to be very little lag. I think I might have experienced some slight lag only a couple times, one of which being in the video I took.

Anyways, just figured I’d take a few pictures and record some footage. If I can I might write a more detailed analysis down the line.

  • I heard there’s a pretty bad respawn bug. Some folks getting stuck unable to respawn for long periods of time. That’s the only complaint I’ve seen.

The skill points system looks pretty cool.

  • @Macha I’ve been playing PC games years longer than console games. I’m well acquainted with a keyboard and mouse. I like playing with a controller. Simple as that.

  • Graev, just curious. How do you capture videos on PS3? What do you use? Do you have any plan to try out bad company 2?

  • I don’t get it how anyone could prefer a controller over the mouse and keyboard. I’m pretty well-versed in using a controller on my PS3, but I’m waaay more precise with the mouse (helps I have a VERY accurate mouse too)

  • @ Kim: I too prefer a controller over mouse and keyboard for shooters, and like Graev I’ve been playing games for far longer on my PC.

Personally, I keyboard moving, especially since MMOs are my main thing. It’s clunky, imprecise and half the time pretty annoying to have to keep your finger down all the time whereas with a mouse you can be far more precise even by simply toggling auto-run and going from there.

I CAN play with a mouse and keyboard, but in shooters the controller (especially the PS3 one) feels a lot more fluid, and I started with shooters on my olde xbox, so using a controller is what I’m used to.

  • My ps3 has just been hacked then I received this message:

“A nasty little hacker by the name of KILLA_KIWI has discovered a new exploit for the PS3 similar to a virus. Problems start when you join a game with KILLA_KIWI or a chat room. Shortly after your PS3 will freeze regularly and display the error “hard drive corrupt” It is still unknown how KK hacks the PS3 but we think he is using a custom program through Linux. Numerous accounts have been hacked and credit csard details stolen.”

I was playing MAG and this KILLA_KIWI was in my squad. AFter 10 mins my PS3 froze up so I restarted then got the message above. I then checked my credit card and $300 dollars had been spent on PSN all in the space of about 30 mins.
Is this a problem with MAG?
As you can imagine I am really ticked off.

  • @MadYoda I use the Hauppage HD PVR to capture console footage. And I’m not quite sold on Bad Company 2. If I did end up getting it then I would likely get the PC version to play with Keen.

  • @We Fly Spitfires: I wouldn’t go as far as saying it’s a MMOFPS. It’s simply a shooter with very big maps where the outcome counts towards your faction winning/losing.

  • I heard the factions are extremely unbalanced, SVER winning the majority of the matches, and having a lot more players.

  • I don’t know about unbalanced. We lose almost as much as we win.

Each game type seems to have a higher concentration of each faction. Valor is almost twice as populated as the other two factions in Sabotage while the same can be said for Raven in Acquisition. Only place SVER seems to have a controlling presence is the domination game mode.

  • With a game so big i would imagine you would get a bit of lag? is there much…

IMO, wouldnt this game just be like any othere shooter because it doesnt really mater the size of the map because everyones spread out across this huge level kinda making it so most of the battles would just be like any other shooter (10 v 10 or so) then again i havent played it im just questioning..

  • Yeh cool, (not trying to bad the game out or anything, looks fun but) then its not rly in a way playing with 255 ppl its more like 30 and there is another 30 playing miles away that u make little contact with lol

  • @Tomsh: Yeah, but BF:BC2 would be unplayable with that many players. They had to keep the graphics in check to keep the lag from cropping up. Honestly, after a little bit you stop noticing because they’re really not all that bad.

In MMO terms, MAG is to Call of Duty and Battlefield what Fallen Earth is to WoW.

  • well to be fair, when i used to play BF2 on 64 player servers, there were very seldom if ever 64 players in the same small vicinity, people would spread out to cap points, camp spots, ambush sites, etc.

also, anytime you had more than a few in the same are, people would die and spread out.
