WAR PQ/group combat Video – Shaman PoV

Found a cool Warhammer video of some members of the Destruction realm participating in what looks to be a Public Quest. The video is shot from the Shaman’s point of view and includes what looks like a full group+ fighting mounted NPCs. In the video I also noticed the Marauder’s tentacle ability being used, what looked like a Squig Herder coming out of a Squig, a ranged squig attacking, and some really neat spell effects.

  • Hmm, I only see an empty blank space where a video should be. Can you add a text link to the video as well?

  • Looks good. You were so right about it when you said ‘What’s the problem with auto-attacking’ (or something to that effect) just before the release of AoC. Before I played AoC, I thought auto-attacks were stale, but after getting to 72 and pressing the 1, 2, 3, Q and E buttons god knows how many times, I’d be quite happy to go back to an auto-attack based game!

  • Auto Attack is stale, Age of Conan is a great system and i would continue to play it if it wasn’t for the quest hole. Going back to the old way seems alien to me after the breath of fresh air that was AoC.

  • Here you go Graktar: http://www.gamevideos.com/video/id/19587

@Sylar: I can appreciate your point of view there. Even playing Conan for a combined month of play (beta’s, release, etc) I found it odd to play the auto attack formula again. However, It grows on you and, at least for me, it feels more comfortable than Conan’s excessive button pressing.

  • Don’t get me wrong, I thought AoC’s combat was good… its idea was anyway. However I don’t think it was well implemented in AoC.
    1) Hitting an attack seemed slow and unresponsive.
    2) Combos didn’t feel like combos at all. Partly because the ‘combo’ came after the ‘combo attacks’. I think the combo should arise during the attacks that lead to the combo.
    3) Having to enact your characters every swipe got lame by the time you were getting much above 60. Although that is probably also due the lack of quests – it was pure grinding post 60, and that meant a LOT of killing mobs, which meant a LOT of button mashing. That blew.

  • I like the little visual effects they got going on down on the skill bar – a little easier looking at that out of the corner of your eye rather than how it is in WoW, paying more attention to the skill bar timer than what’s going on elsewhere. Those effects will allow for better focus in gameplay.

  • The shaman’s spells really need a particle boost because they are looking a little weeny in the video.

  • @Blackwings: Agreed. That’s the Gork and Mork WAAAGH! building up. The greater the intensity of the graphic on those hotbar’d abilities, the more WAAAGH! you have saved up to use. When it erupts into that green flame it has peaked.

@Railith: Yeah, mostly agree. I would like to see a bit more ‘oomph’ in the spell effects. Perhaps that is tied in to the graphics not being completely finished. I’m hoping for a particle effects slider bar that I can crank all the way up.

  • I am guessing the wow-clone folks did not play text-based games… “It uses texts and directions to move? clone.”

  • Oh it’s too easy, I can’t say it. Oh well, someone’s got to… may as well be me.
    Matt, you are epic fail.

  • Thanks for the link Keen. Website is blocked by my stupid work internet filters which would be why I couldn’t see the embedded version either. Oh well, I’ll check it out at home. Just . . . 6 hours to go . . . sigh.

  • That is like an even more boring version of WoW. What are these guys thinking? Bad bad bad graphics and slooooooow auto-attack style combat. MMOs are definitely on the down hill.

The GUI looks nice though. Lol!

  • I dunno, every time more media comes out for WAR I try to give it a chance, but I swear the more I’m exposed to it, the worse the game looks. My personal dislike for the graphics style notwithstanding, the video made combat seem like a really detached experience. A lot of downtime for that shaman between spells/melee, and a lot of stand around and punch the enemy from his groupmates made it seem like there’s not a lot of immediacy to the combat.

Really starting to think I’m going to end up back with WoW soon, really not seeing much in the way of alternative MMO’s that grab me right now. At least till Blackstar gets a publisher.

  • Remember though Shutter that that is a ‘support class’ so not necessarily in the fight all the time. There are classes that have much faster combat styles, as well as being rewarded for staying in combat.

  • To be honest, this is a pretty horrible promo video and I’d be surprised if Mythic gave it the green light…

  • 1) Low res video quality
    2) Low res textures (beta footage)
    3) No lighting effects (beta footage)
    4) Doesn’t feature the team play (seemed like a FFA)
    5) Kind of boring mobs (mounted, but not very dynamic)
    6) He didn’t seem overly skilled (slow pace – no offense)
    7) Everything was so small you couldn’t really see the details (the video wouldn’t go fullscreen for me)

I’m not saying this to be incendiary – you know I love the game – but it seems like the point of this video is to say “Hey, check out what it’s like to play this game from my perspective. This is what you can expect!”

If that’s the case, it just doesn’t do it for me.

Unless your expectations are pretty low, I just think a video like this is fuel for the WAR-haters out there (not that they really matter anyway – the game will come out – they won’t play – hundreds of thousands of others will – and that will be that).

  • The video was posted by some random guy on a video site. I don’t think it’s officially released in any way. Half the thing on your list are the byproducts of such a circumstance.

  • For sure, which is why I said there is no way in hell I think Mythic endorsed this video as any kind of “promo” in #21. :p

I’m really waiting for them to start showing us some videos with all the juice turned up to full. I really think that will do a lot to weaken the WoW comparisons. If they can crank out screenshots like this:

why can’t they start cranking out some awesome videos for once? I don’t even think the HD videos from your other post really show WAR’s true potential.

  • Agree with Sel and a lot of others, the graphics really look like shit right now. And that pic you posted Snafzg, thats not good, its nearly decent, with poor lighting. No character what so ever. That said, the gameplay is what does it for me, so that better be the shining jesus of amazing gameplay.
