PotBS: More incentives for PvP

I’ve been a harsh critic on how I feel the PvP gameplay in PotBS is lacking. I’ve been saying for a long time that the risk outweighs the reward. I’ve also tried very hard to create ideas for alternate forms of gameplay to make the world feel more dynamic and enriching for the average pvp player. I’m very pleased to see that FLS has seen the need for these changes. In a recent Devlog, DrewC of FLS had this to say:

“There is a lot of risk to PvP in Pirates of the Burning Sea, and we want to create some more interesting rewards for that risk…. We want to give you more neat stuff from PvP. We have big plans to add cool PvE rewards for some of the new missions we’re creating, and we’re going to create equally cool PvP rewards. Initially these will probably be obtained by turning in Marks of Victory, purely because that’s the quickest way to get them to you, but we want to create other, interesting avenues for PvP rewards.”

That’s a step in the right direction. I’ll be keeping an eye on these changes.

  • How is the game doing? I haven’t looked in since I quit. I like FLS and its employees quite a bit and wish them the best.

  • The game is doing decently. Since I began testing in beta it was clear that PotBS would have a very tight and small community. Similar to EVE, PotBS is so “different” from most MMOs that it has pushed itself into a niche category.

With these changes the game will definitely appeal to more people. I really wish the changes had been made sooner since I feel rewards for the high risk in the game are essential to counterbalance burnout.

I’m currently on a break from the game (maxed out before the first free month was even over) but might return soon to try these changes out.
