I guess Resistance really is Futile

How’s that for a witty Star Trek related blog title?! Huh?! huh?! Oh well I tried. 😛

You probably already know the news about Star Trek Online by reading one of many sources available to you out there. I don’t even know if it’s a rumor or truth anymore to be quite honest with you. Things are twisted up so quickly on the interwebs that sometimes it’s tough to be sure. But if I go by what I know, or try to understand, from these sources then things are not looking good for the Federation my friends. Perpetual is apparently bought up and a company looking to break into the MMO market has bought them and their game.

According to what has been said they are going to take STO in a more “casual direction”. Honestly that term is so ridiculously broad now and it means so many different things to so many different people that I’m not going to touch it with a 10 foot pole. No one should even dare a conjecture at this point. It’s also been said that the game could go down the path of being free to play with microtransactions. Get real people, would you? You might as well put a gun phaser to your head game because that one is suicide. It’s a common practice in Korean and Asian market for MMO’s but out in the western industry most of us don’t take kindly to being dime’d and nickle’d. I can see it now.. Is my galaxy class star ship going to cost me $5? Is Fuel for my ship going to cost me $1 but if I want to use the warp engines is that even more? My phaser with a +1 modifier will be $0.40? Oh wait that’s +1 sorry that $0.75… If I didn’t know better I’d think maybe EA sports bought STO because right now that’s the vibe I’m getting.

IF – and I stress the IF – this is all true then STO can kiss its chance for being a ‘huge’ goodbye. I won’t touch it and everyone I know won’t even give it the time of day. Who is in charge of the IP anyway? Why would you let this amazing potential fall into the hands of a business model MMO approach? Some people out there are being optimistic saying that perhaps it might work. I however don’t see it happening and what little chance STO had for even being released is now being squashed.

I guess we’ll just have to sit back and wait now to see if this is all true or just a horrible nightmare.

You know what… this is Q’s doing. Q! Show yourself! This must be one of his tricks…

  • Well if not Star Trek then maybe the Star Gate MMO will actually see a release date. Then again lately its seems like all the new MMO studios have been running out of money before actually releasing a game. It’s getting so that I only ever really believe a game is actually coming out if one of the big five announce it. NCSoft, Mythic, SOE, Turbine or Blizzard.
