Breaking News: Gods and Heroes put on hold indefinitely

Unfortunately it seems as though Gods and Heroes from Perpetual Entertainment will be put on hold. You might be sitting there thinking to yourself “What is Gods and Heroes?” and to be honest I can’t really say much to answer your question. Barely in the infant stages of Beta and progressing slowly Gods and Heroes had a lot of ‘potential’ – there’s that scary word again… It should be a curse word.
Sadly, from the Official Site:

Friends, Romans, Countrymen, Lend me your ears…

Loyal and faithful community members and Beta testers, thank you for your support, help, and understanding during the Gods & Heroes: Rome Rising development process.

The development team established some very lofty and ambitious goals when the initial work was started on Gods & Heroes. Recently, we took a step back to evaluate the competitive landscape, the game’s current state, and the overall goals for our organization. And while we are truly proud of and pleased with what we have created in Gods & Heroes, we also realize that achieving the level of quality and polish that we are committed to will take a significant investment.

The Perpetual team is faced with a unique challenge of simultaneously developing both Gods & Heroes and Star Trek Online in addition to growing our Online Game Platform business. After assessing all of Perpetual’s opportunities, we have made the decision to put the development of Gods & Heroes on indefinite hold.

I want to express my overwhelming gratitude to the community, engineers, designers, artists, animators, and the game services team for the support and effort that has gone into Gods & Heroes.

Moving forward, we’re shifting our collective focus, resources and development efforts to Perpetual’s Platform Services division and Star Trek Online, thereby ensuring that the game lives up to the high level of expectation set by the dedicated Star Trek fan base.

Again, I would personally like to thank all of the Gods & Heroes supporters who have been with us from the beginning. Hopefully, your continued support will be as valuable to our future endeavors as it was with Gods & Heroes..

Vade in pace,
Chris McKibbin

Honestly, for me, this is actually good news. The ideas, while interesting, were not really enough to grab me and say “Keen you must play this game!”. I never felt compelled to get into Gods and Heroes and some of their Pokemon-esque mechanics had me being skeptical. HOWEVER! Yay! Star Trek Online will receive all the resources and effort from the Perpetual Entertainment team. Star Trek Online is hovering really low on the radar right now and shockingly this is the biggest news I’ve heard yet regarding what could be one heck of a game. I’ll be keeping my eyes open for any more news regarding Gods and Heroes and Star Trek Online. Until then, live long and prosper Star Trek Fans.

  • Yeah it’s sad to see games never release. 🙁 The bright side though is that Star Trek Online could be huge for Perpetual.

  • They certainly need it to be, Keen. GnH is 2-3 years of dev time down the tubes. Ouch. Garriott knows how that feels, and the newly generic TR is the result of it.

I hope STO doesn’t become “Star Trek Meets WoW with Ships”, like GnH was “Rome meets WoW with Pokemon”. Last I heard, the big ships weren’t even going to be playable, no Enterprise class ships even possibly. So how is that star trek if you’re left jettisoning aroun in a solo-pod?

I hope they take a page of PotBS, and if they’re worried about a crew, make a NPC one part of owning a ship.

Bah, this is all just rambling. The face of STO will now likely change more and more as they ramp up production. One wonders how long they knew this was coming. I was in GnH beta, and while it certainly wasn’t ready for release, I got the feeling it was heading in the right direction and just needed time.

    Another one bites the dust.

  • It’s kind of a mixed bag for them. Some view it as positive since they can put all their focus on STO. But a lot of vocal STO fans view it as “well if they screwed GnH up, then STO is screwed as well.”

Likely, they’ve learned a lot of things as they went along and can put it to some better use now. I’m still not sure what I can say regarding GnH. Since the term they used is not canceled but on hold indefinitely, I’m making the assumption NDA’s are still in effect.
