Playstation 3 dropping $100 and adding 20gb

Well it was only a matter of time. From the start Sony knew it was costing them too much money to release at a competitive price with the Xbox360 but they did say eventually the price would drop. Yesterday, Monday July 9, Sony announced they would be dropping the price of the Playstation 3(Ps3) by $100(17%). This now places them only $20 above the Xbox360 at $500.

In addition to their price drop Sony also announced a new model for the PS3 will include a larger hard drive, boosting the already large drive from 60gb to 80gb. Basically they’re selling the new model at the original price ($600) with more hard drive space.

This is great news for those of you wanting to give the PS3 a try. Right now I enjoy playing both Xbox360 and PS3 and hope the lower price will drive both consoles to new heights.

  • Well I feel a little screwed. For $100 less I could have gotten a larger hard drive and a game bundled with it? I would have gladly waited until now to pick one up. The library has not grown much in all the time the PS3 has been out. There are still only a few really good games. Even if you buy one now you wont have missed out on much.

  • This is pretty good news. I am actually surprised that it has taken this long for them to lower the price. Personally, I still won’t bother with one… all of the third party exclusives are coming out on the 360, at least the ones that I am interested in. And there aren’t a whole lot of the first party exclusives that make me say oooo I gotta get one now! 😀

What will be really interesting is what Sony will have to say if there isn’t a spike in the number of ps3’s sold. Before it was because the US was “a land of cheap people” that the ps3 didn’t sell now what excuse will they come up with? 🙂

  • I’m inclined to agree with Peter Moore and Harrison over at Msoft and Ninty respectively… it just won’t be enough. If Sony had the software to really back up their hardware cost, they’d be doing a lot better. But until some big ole blockbusters come out, it’s going to continue to get trounced by the little system that could and the hardcore gamer’s system.

  • I have a good feeling that with the new titles on the way and PS3’s lower cost we will see some great things from Sony. I’m crossing my fingers.
