WAR June Newsletter

Yes precious...I have been INCREDIBLY busy the past few days and today has knocked me off my feet completely. I hopped on the comp long enough to discover that the links for the June Newsletter had been leaked (Thanks WHA). Yippy! Time to go through them and give my thoughts.

The video of the month was once again the cornerstone of the entire newsletter. It gave out, mostly, clarification and detail on facts that we were already given a few newsletters ago. Toward the end of the Podcast Jeff mentions “Banner Scraps” that can be used to HELP buy some of the best RvR gear. These scraps come from taking enemy standards. Overall the standard system sounds like it’s been thought out and developed to be an additional layer to RvR combat in general because of the bonuses gained from the tactics that go along with it.

The Mongbat video…. …. ….. .. ….. Josh you scare me. :P *pets the banner*

Paul’s Video Blogs were once again fantastic. I recommend “Jumping Gyro”.

The Bastion Stair looks downright sexy. I hope all the dungeons in the game will look cool and contain lots of interesting content. If there’s anything in a mmorpg that turns me off of dungeon crawling or pve in general it’s ugly and monotonous dungeons. GET THEM RIGHT MYTHIC!

The last bit I want to comment on is the White Lion grab bag info. I can’t seem to shake the monkey on my back whispering “It sounds like the WoW hunter!” Well, it’s more of a melee version I guess. Overall the grab bag didn’t do much for me in the White Lion department. I’m still not hyped about that class much, but look forward to killing dozens of them on the battlefield.

Overall… mediocre newsletter. Nothing blew me away or made my jaw drop in awe – except Josh petting the banner. As more links become available I’ll add them to the list.

Warhammer Online on X-Play

Paul Barnett and Jeff “The” Hickman were on G4′s X-Play today showing off Warhammer Online. Nothing new was mentioned but the gameplay footage looked very polished. Here’s the clip:

Classic X-Play short and crappy interview where they give the guests little time to say anything. “Okay you have 10 seconds, GO!” … You guys did a good job though!

Quotes that stood out:
Jeff and Paul: “We have everything you would expect from a MMO; The greatest hits.”
Paul: “Your game, your way”

WAR May Newsletter: Crafting info and more!

The Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning May newsletter info has leaked out which means it’s time to find the bib! *begins drooling*  This month there are several interesting bits of information which you can explore on your own in the links below, but the big feature of this newsletter is definitely the video podcast.  Mark Jacobs himself takes the reigns of this month’s podcast and delivers a ton of information regarding the crafting and gathering professions that we will see in WAR.

Here’s the video link because I can’t get it to stop autoplaying.  Watch it then read my comments below.

Woah! I’m really pleased to hear the emphasis placed on 1) useful items and 2) something other than grinding.  Crafting systems in other recentely released mmorpgs have been infamous for being exactly like the two negatives Mark explained.  LOTRO for example had me making hundreds of scrolls that no one would use or buy just so I could reach the higher level.  I also had to find rare recipes.  Well, as Mark said, in WAR these two tediums are no more.

Of the two crafting systems I think Talisman Making sounds like my style. I really enjoy breaking down magic items and using them to imbue others.  From what Mark said it sounds like certain items will have slots or sockets of some sort, and these talismans will go into them.  (It does sound a bit like Spellcrafting in DAoC).  Picking a gathering profession to go along with the main profession is a common theme but it sounds different enough with a slight twist to be interesting.  Apothecary does sound intrigueing as well, but I’ve grown weary of making potions because of their limited usefulness.  Maybe potions will come with some great buffs for RvR, in which case I might reconsider leaning toward Talismans.

Great job on the video Mark!  I enjoyed hearing you explain your vision firsthand and your sincerety shows.  I hope you’ll take the opportunity to do more of these in the future.  Oh, and by the time the video finished I was like.. Josh who?  (I kid!)

Here are some links to the rest of the May Newsletter:

Dwarf Mount and Dark Elf Mount concepts:

Great stuff!  If I find any links that I missed I’ll add them in tonight.

What do you guys think of the crafting system?  Anyone here as impressed and excited as I am?  This might be the first time in a mmorpg that I ever stick with crafting long term.

WAR Conference Call + info + sexy goblins = Happy Keen

Mmmmm WAR info.. *drools for a few minutes*

First off this must be said… Sexiest. Goblin. Ever. *ahem*

The big major press sites out there all participated in a conference call a couple days ago and as a result we have lots of tidbits of information to digest and, in my case, drool over.  You can read the info in its entirety  at one or two of my favorite stops, but I want to briefly point out a few interesting notes.

The game has been receiving some pretty intensive stress testing in beta, particularly in the area of RVR. Since the model for RVR was DAoC, what has the testing shown and how will that portion of the game differ from Camelot?

Paul: “WE KNOW WHAT WE ARE DOING!!”

Jeff: “We learned a lot of great stuff from Dark Age of Camelot, as far as how to balance out realms, how to balance out population, how to balance classes, what’s fun, what’s not, what do they enjoy doing in short bursts, and what do they enjoy doing in long bursts. A lot of the stuff we are doing with Warhammer was derived from Camelot. Some of these are the “if only we could do this… when we were making Camelot, but we couldn’t”. Warhammer builds on the great foundation that Camelot put in place for us, but it also differs greatly.”

There’s just something about the WAR dev team that exudes this sense of “We have experience.  We know what we’re doing”.  Aside from Paul screaming the very fact (something I would have payed money to hear) the dev team on WAR gives me a feeling akin to driving in the car with someone you know vs. a stranger.

I have played a successful and wonderful Mythic mmorpg and now that they are developing a second I feel like I can sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride.  Listening to or watching Josh Drescher is like eating comfort food.  Err, that sounds sorta weird.  *looks around*  Moving along now…

What systems are in place, if any, to prevent a winning side from continually getting stronger and the losing side only getting weaker?

There are rewards for winning but the longer a zone is under control of the winning side there will be subtle things to bring the losers up to par, slowly taking the winning sides advantage away. Some examples of how this will be done included buffs to the losing realm, increasing guards etc. Their intentions are to not punish the winning side but to give you a sense that the competition is always lively and interesting.

I have been saying that for years!  Don’t punish the winner, boost the underdog!  I feel exhilarated to know that someone is finally getting it.

Lastly I want to share one final bit of info:

Will there be Anti-Zerg mechanisms?

There is ample opportunity for large groups of people to run and around and kill each other, while there is just as much opportunity for evenly matched groups to kill each other.

Paul went on to further explain that strategy in Warhammer will be of major importance, and that large groups are no match for skilled players.

One word: Hallelujah!

Go and read the entire conference call on one of the sites I linked above.  If you’re like me you’ll take any tidbits of information and treasure them in this drought.
