MMORPG's (Active KGC Guilds) > Guild Wars 2
The more I read about GW2...
Damage:
the more it makes me nervous. Yes I loved playing GW2 especially with you guys. (The jumping puzzle day was just FANTASTIC!)
My issue is what's becoming of MMO's these days and what other people want out of them. I just read on twitter where they were asking if GW2 has what it takes to become an eSport. I wanted to scream NO, but that is not where MMO's are going I am afraid. Just like WoW has tainted the MMO world, so now does eSport.
IMO, MMO's should not nor ever be about the sport of playing. To me that defeats the whole purpose of MMO's. MMO's should be about community and more like a living breathing world not an eSport.
So I hang my head and hope that GW2 doesn't turn into an eSport video game but I know it probably will. So I ask myself now, do I play GW2 with my friends and enjoy it for a month or more or do I just not play it and continue in P99 knowing even though the game is 13 years old it's an MMO designed the way I like to play?
Evalissa:
I don't think their is any harm in having E-Sport ish guild battles like in the old games, you participate or you don't. I don't think their is any worry that it will have any effect on those who do not enjoy that thing
Not enough that it should dissuade you from playing at any rate
Keen:
ArenaNet will jump at the chance to make their sPvP an eSport. They want what WoW has with arenas, tournaments, and popularity among the competitive scene.
I think it should be fine as long as they keep it separate from the rest of the game. WoW didn't do that. WoW's arenas were very much tied into the rest of the pvp. Doing arenas, and being good, gave a huge gear advantage in battlegrounds and open-world. sPvP and WvW are entirely different characters (or versions of your character). Someone can be a sPvP pro, but suck in WvW -- that I'm okay with.
The whole mentality eSports is quite pervasive when applied to MMO game design. I dislike how prolific it has become, and how it so easily impacts game design. All I can hope for is someone intelligent enough at ArenaNet (and every future MMO) to step in and keep it tucked away where it belongs.
Malik:
Keen's right.
I like esport viability :( I liked arena (even though i was bad) and I like dota
Evalissa:
GW1 was a viable E-sport before arenas and such in WoW, the Guild Vs Guild PvP had spectator modes and you could pop up a window to instantly watch (delayed) live matches between guilds.
It was kept completely separate from the PvE game as skills that were consider OP in PvP were modified and had a PvE and PvP variant, and since their were no 'PvP armours' it had no real effect on the normal PvP either
Although they have said they do not want to split skills again in gw2, they said they would rather split them than damage one type of gameplay to balance another, and since it again lacks gear treadmill's that downside is removed as well
ofcourse, I am Bias, I'm a big E-Sports fan, I watch a lot of LoL and SC2 matches and anything else I stumble onto.
