Add that in with their version of 3 faction PvP that hits with the next patch (1.9) could be interesting..

Definitely good for them.  It means they're still making money.  I wish the game were more compelling to keep me interested.  I just can't bring myself to play the ad nauseum quest model anymore.

We pick faction individually from what I have seen.  There are three factions and we select the one that we want.. If I remember correctly you have one faction that wants to rule over the regular people, one that thinks that they have the responsibility to protect them and not sure on the third..

The "open" world PvP is pretty much in a Sliver (raid dungeon) that encompasses the entire Stillmoor area.

    Dominion: This faction seeks to protect mortals from elementals and are sworn to keeping them safe.
    Oathsworn: This group tends to believe that conquering cults and dragons is paramount above all. They are considered the “steadfast soldier and protector” of Telara.
    Nightfall: This faction seeks to ascend beyond Telara and believe in imposing the rule of the Ascended on mortals.

Might be worth checking out depending how the pvp is implemeted

RIFT had the same old type of questing and the rift events were repetitive but the class system was pretty interesting

Correction on the factions:

Dominion - The Blood Storm has won victories because Telara is weak. Fractious, bickering towns without proper defenses make easy prey for the Dragons and their cults. Without strong leadership, Telara fell to the planes in every sliver of reality they invaded. Only the Ascended have the strength to unite the world, to unite the cosmos! The Dominion welcome all Ascended to share the burden of rule, but those who refuse their burden must be eliminated.

Oathsworn -
Since the Age of Dragons, Telara has relied upon her protectors. First, mortal heroes rose to imprison the dragons and construct the Ward that safeguarded the world for centuries. Today, the Ascended quest tirelessly to slay the Blood Storm themselves. This is the legacy of service that the Oathsworn adhere to. They are the protectors of creation, and the discovery of the many slivers of Telara only strengthens their resolve. The Oathsworn have been given a gift. Either by divine will or advanced technology, they were brought back to the world with incredible power to fulfill a great purpose. The Ascended have saved the world time and time again from the danger of the planes. As the Ascended conquer the cults and the dragons, they must unite and prepare for the next great threat.

Nightfall - Nightfall believes that the Ascended share ultimate purpose beyond protecting Telara from dragons, monsters, and cultists. The next step along the journey of Ascension is to leave this world for more cosmic realms, before it’s too late. For as power of the Ascended grows, only the might of the other Ascended can oppose them, and such a conflict would destroy any inhabited reality. Thus, all Ascended should leave Telara for good and journey into the planes to seek their ultimate purpose. Nightfall hopes this departure will be voluntary, but they will send dissenters to the River of Souls rather than allow their presence to further contaminate Telara.


Dominion wants to rule, Oathsworn wants to protect, and Nightfall wants to continue to ascend.

The PvP sliver goes in supposedly with the next patch which we are thinking is end of June maybe July.. So I'm sure there will be videos up pretty soon with how it all plays out.

I was able to get into the beta of the PVP when it hit the PTS for about 5 hours.

each person selects one of the 3 factions and the battle plays out like a giant BG.
the one interesting thing i liked is that if you were not totally decked out in pvp gear you can choose to do other quests to get point (EX: Run boxes to points, or crafts some items to get points)
it is a interesting idea but i feel that it is not fushed out well and can use alot of work.

Dang, that's a let down to hear the gameplay is like a giant BG.  I guess they built themselves into a corner with two factions, though.  I almost wish they would have just made a dynamic contested PvP region for the two factions to fight over.

Until they had announced this I had thought it was on the table Keen.  There is one area that was supposedly in development on the main continent (east of Droughtlands called the Planetouched Wilds) but I haven't heard anything about it in a long while.. Unless of course this was what they had intended from the start.  Two factions is definitely limiting though, almost wish they would have a defector faction just to add it into the mix.

I may end up writing a blog post on the idea of older games changing things up.  How drastic can a game change before it's too much?  Obviously Rift isn't changing all that much by basically letting players sign up for whatever faction they want to represent in what constitutes as little more than a battleground.

If Rift actually did change drastically, I would resub if nothing else was on my plate.  Like right now, I am not subscribed to anything.
