K&G Vanilla Minecraft Server
Blargh:
The old servers are, as of today (Sep 16), turned off permanently.
Keen's original Minecraft thread here
(IPs and most of the info is out of date now, sorry)
If you need to downgrade or install a pre-modded MInecraft client:
for 1.2.5 - Vanilla; pre-modded with Minimap; pre-modded with Minimap and WorldEdit ClientUI
for 1.2.4 - ditto
for 1.2.3 - ditto
Download Minecraft clients (with some brief instructions) here.

I have switched hosting from a Linode 2048 (2gb ram virtual server costing about 80 bucks a month) to a Kimsufi 24G (24gb ram dedicated server costing about 80 bucks a month :P )
BTW, since there is quite a lot of spare capacity, I'm open to ideas/suggestions/requests regarding what else could be put on the server, within the following limits:
- it is legal
- it is not high-volume traffic (so no videos, no torrents, etc)
- it is *cough* free
Keen:
I've been getting a "Disconnected by server. Took too long to log in" message.
Blargh:
Server's still on 1.1 and staying there until craftbukkit releases an update, so if you've updated that might be the reason.
Otherwise, its the internet smacking the living daylights out of the MC web server (minecraft.net) for the 1.2 download.
Long version:
When you login to the client, it authenticates with the minecraft.net web server. When that web server is busy, like it would be when a new release is out, you would often enough see login failed errors in the client.
Once you clear that hurdle and connect to an MC GAME server (just about any game server at all), the server confirms your identity with the MC web server as well. If the web server is busy, you'll see all kinds of odd errors, from "your login is fake" to timeouts, to "login took too long" (which is the game server blaming your client for the web server being slow :P )
Never mind all that. Version mismatch confirmed.
Blargh:
Servers down for 1.2 upgrade.
We're online.
Looking good, I really like the build-able-to-256 world. The old/new chunk borderlines, might be worthy of a groan or two.
Blargh:
Nether Travel
Background trivia:
Nether portals are created by building a hollow rectangular 4x5 frame out of obsidian (corners are optional) and lightning up the inside of it with a flint'n'steel.
When entered, the game will try and find the nearest accessible portal in the "other" world, or failing that create one. Once a portal has been picked or created, the player will be teleported to it.
Nether portals are bi-directional, allowing travel from the main world (the normal one) to the netherworld and back. With careful placement of the portal pairs, a functional nether travel network can be easily built.
To use a nether portal, stand inside it, in the purple swirls and wait a bit, the game enforces a delay on nether portal travel.
The netherworld works in an interesting way. For each block moved horizontally in the nether, the player's mirror position in the real world is moved 8 blocks, in effect allowing a distance compression of 8:1 when travelling via the nether.
For more about the nether and nether portals that you could ever want to know - See the Minecraft Wiki Nether Portal Page
Here is a rough map of the portals and pathways connecting them - the lines in green I have drawn over the map by hand, since parts of the paths are under rocks and as such, do not appear on the dynamap.
Portals and their mirror locations in the main world:
1 - Kobold Kingdom. Main world portal is in the upper level of the stone tower (the north-east tower).
2 - Coastal Town. Main world portal is on a ledge sticking out of the hills to the east of the town.
3 - Stone Temple. Main world portal is underneath the temple, entrance in the east side of the hill.
4 - Viking Village. Main world portal is under Keen's bathtub, through the dead warriors' crypt.
5 - Quarry. Main world portal is just under the foreman's hut in the western wall.
6 - Coastal Watch. Main world portal is under the western fort, go down underneath the throne.
7 - Abandoned Dwarf Mine. Main world portal is at the entrance to the mine proper, at the top level.
8 - Castle Firefly. Main world portals (there are two, either works) are in the basement of the wizard tower of the castle.
Warning to the wise travelling the nether:
Attacking zombie pigmen will cause all others nearby to attack you.
Wraiths shoot fireballs.
Fireballs hurt :(
