MMORPG's (Active KGC Guilds) > Guild Wars 2

Is the 2 that big of a deal?

Horrorshow:
It is often said that MMOs should not name a sequel with a numbered naming scheme. I am not 100% certain but, I believe this started when EQ2 was released.

Does anyone believe this is somewhat legitimate, or more of a modern superstition, or for heads of companies to hide behind a false statement to not admit bad game mechanics and over all design flaws?

If GW2 is designed well and succeeds what will the CEOs and heads of companies fall back when for excuses?

Bartlebe:
Are you saying that you think companies shouldn't hide behind the name power of the first game but instead, should rename it and make it something new?

Seems like it works the other ways. By naming it "2" they can cash in on the easy name recognition from the first game.

Damage:
Actually the first MMO sequel to use a number was AC2 that was released Nov. 22, 2002.

I would have to say that of all the sequels to have been released as V. 2, none of them have really done well.  AC2 was shut down and EQ2 wasn't the big hit everyone had hopped it would be.  That said I personally don't think there is a stigma to having a V2 or whatever for your MMO.  Many of us want sequels.  I for one would die for a UO2 or AC3.  The problem has more been the fact that the games themselves were just not that great.

AC2 - People really wanted the sequel to AC and what they got instead was something completely different and virtually a new game.  All we really wanted were updated graphics and fixes to some of the major problems in the game, like how Magic just completely overshadowed melee and every character had to take three of the four schools, Life, Creature and Item, otherwise you were considered gimped.  AC2 ended up being nothing like AC1.  The only similarity was some of the landscape and monster names.

EQ2 - Was just a bad game from the start.  I played EQ on and off again and when I got into the EQ2 closed beta I was really happy, until I played it.  I think I played it for all of about a half hour before I just gave up because the game sucked.

Personally I have no problem playing a numbered sequel.  With so many new games having come out recently that IMO have sucked, I'd actually enjoy a decent sequel of a game I have played in the past and liked as long as it was done well.

Keen:
I would rather see a "2" than a huge acronym.  Can you imagine if they made it something like: "Guild Wars: The Next Awakening"  (or whatever).  People would have to distinguish it from the first by calling it "GWTNA".  The 2 saves some time.

Horrorshow:
I don't care either way with the numerical naming method. It was something I was thinking about when I recalled an old article I once read.

I wanted to bounce it off of everyone else on the forums for their thoughts.

And those have been rather accurate.
