So I took my superduper lvl 12 Hunter to my first BG that I picked up in the big cow treehouse. When I realized there were BGs in the game and I was in que (only 2 minutes) I was like "hot DAMN I miss WAR's BGs". Then I realized it was a capture the flag BG and I was like "CRAP the BGs I skipped in WAR were capture the flags heh!" Anyway, it was a disaster. We lost at the very end by 1 stinking point ...much like Phoenix Gate in WAR. I think I got 3 KBs and basically spend my time chasing the flag holder and dying. I'm sure I'll get the hang of it but that was 20+ minutes taken out of my questing and leveling time.

So, are the BGs worth doing from a leveling standpoint? Do you get xp or loot from them? Should I just use them as getting some practice for PvP later? In WAR I could get loads of xp and renown from them but I was so busy I couldnt tell if I got anything from them in WoW. Should I maybe skip them until later in life?

XP isn't awarded for individual kills.

In WSG (the CTF one) you get xp for each flag cap and at the end.  In all the others you get xp at certain point intervals.  If you win its a pretty good chunk of xp but that win could take anywhere from 5-30 minutes.

The daily quest for the BG is worth doing each day.  After that I would only do more if you're bored or you're in the last 5 levels of the bracket (15-19, 25-29, etc) else you will probably get stomped.

After 20 I think straight questing is faster than living in a BG but I personally find them fun.  I've been mixing questing and BGing along with some random instances but in those last 5 levels or so I BG a lot. 

You're also not going to get any worthwhile loot from pvp until 80.  I have the heirloom items so this isn't an issue but for others they might want to do more question or instance running to keep up in gear.

Personally, I don't like Wsg, but that might be because I still remember guarding the flag on the roof for 2 hours at a time. Thank goodness they've changed things. But yeah, Arathi Basin is pretty fun.

Running any BG in the low end of the bracket is like having a bullseye painted on your back though. lol Plus you get the odd charming comment about how you should "go and level" during the buff up time.

Leveling in a BG is a viable option. I got a Druid from 60-80 that way. The downside is that you aren't building any world faction rep (if you care) and you don't get the quest gear so you'd have to depend on the auction house for all of it.
