Conglomoblog-o-boredom

I’m in a mega gaming drought at the moment. Nothing in my Steam collection — despite the numerous unplayed games — catches my eye, and none of the currently released wanna-be-popular games are giving me the itch. I’d rather go to Disneyland or watch a movie. That’s seriously something I hope to have remedied soon. I’ve learned that other hobbies are WAAAAAY more expensive than gaming… ffs people need to stop complaining about paying for games and subscriptions.

I’m going to just talk on a few random points that I don’t feel like transitioning into their own posts.

Camelot Unchained

My anticipation continues to grow for what I hope is a great game releasing in a little over a year. They launched a new website and continue to communicate at a steady pace. *Beats his head against the keyboard* I just want a game I can live in again and truly progress a character. I want a game where the devs understand what I want and stop trying to chase the “next-gen.” City State Entertainment looks like a fun little team.  I support them.

H1Z1

I’m still waiting for this one. I think it’ll be a lot of fun to jump into a sandbox survival game made by a AAA company. Yeah, yeah, insert SOE remarks here. I’m still hoping, and I think it has promise to be a game that I can at least lose 50 hours in.

Diablo 3

Diablo 3’s latest big patch is pretty cool. I made a Barbarian for the new “season” where players basically start over and see how well they can do. There are new legendaries to find, new rifts, etc. My friends powerleveled me to 70 in like an hour and I’m already decked out in legendaries (Only my boots are amazing so far). D3 is fun because it’s mindless.

Graev is Playing…

Graev is playing Disney Infinity 2.0 and Hyrule Warriors. I’ll be trying to convince him to write blog posts on those soon. Disney Infinity looks pretty cool. I played about an hour with him so far. Worth checking out if you have the money to throw at a very expensive franchise.

  • Actually playing D3 myself, atm. Fun game to play with friends, and pretty boring solo. That said, it’s easy to jump in and out of and the new changes are fun. Prob got about one more month of playing this till its on the shelf for another 2-3 months or till the next exp. All-in all, after the disasterous AH launch, Blizz has created a good game in D3. Hoping another exp is coming in early 2015.

Camelot looks good, but I just looked at the release schedule. First beta is aiming for Feb 2015, with full launch early 2016. From experience I’d guess this game is late 2016, and from more experience, I’m not getting sucked into the hype of the game that far out.

H1Z1 could be interesting, but just brushing off all the SOE jokes isn’t really all that funny. Maybe they can get it right though. Sure hope so, as I loved Rust. Hope the game play is similar to Rust in that no character progression is needed. Last thing I want is to grind skills on my character. If this is the case, my prediction is a total flop. The latest trend I’m recognizing is adding in MMO elements to games which don’t need them. Seems like a great idea initially, but in the end its tedious and adds no real gameplay value. Would be curious about others view on this?

  • @Bhagpuss: Not even a little bit. I just can’t get into it. I have a feeling most people won’t be playing within 2 months.

  • “I’ve learned that other hobbies are WAAAAAY more expensive than gaming… ffs people need to stop complaining about paying for games and subscriptions.” -Keen

Thank you for saying that. When it costs damn near 40 bucks to take my woman to the movies I find it really difficult to bitch about most pricing in the gaming industry. It’s hilariously cheap compared to my other hobbies (cars and cosplay).

I’m surprised you aren’t playing ArcheAge either. At least you saved some money on a mmo launch for once! /highfive 🙂

  • I’m slowly getting a group together to try P99. Al’Kabor has been closed long enough that I’m feeling the need for some classic EQ.

  • “Not even a little bit. I just can’t get into it. I have a feeling most people won’t be playing within 2 months.”

Something tells me you will be playing it within 2 months. 🙂

  • It’s usually the other way around Syn. I’m usually the one who says, “Nah I’ll be playing this in 2 months!” and I end up quitting in 3 weeks.

@Jenks: I want to play P99 and build a group to play too. If my schedule were just a little more consistent I think I could do it. I have a level 24 Enchanter.

@Gali: Graev got Shadows of Mordor. I hope he’ll post about it soon.

  • That’s why I find this particular situation amusing. You have jumped into so many MMOs you knew or suspected wouldn’t work out, yet here is one that does and you of all people are currently on the sideline. Kinda reminds me of EQ2 players when WoW came out.

    • I’m still not sold on ArcheAge though. I know you are, but I can’t see the fun in a quest grind to unlock the sorta-sandbox at the end dominated by purely a pvp mindset and big guilds.

  • Re-load Total War: Rome 2 and head over to the Steam Workshop and check out some of the awesome Mods. There is the Faction Unlock (totaling about 50 plus factions to play) and numerous Unit packs to round out your armies.

It’s refreshing to play as an underdog (minor faction) where every move is tense and your one full stack army needs to be well balanced.

  • I’ll have a post up at some point about the initial grind of AA, because I think that’s one of the more misunderstood aspects of the game (I was in that camp until after launch).

Can you quest grind until 30 or 50 before doing anything else? Yup, and I’m sure there are some out there who do so and bitch about it, just like there are EVE pilots who grind missions in High-Sec for months and quit out of boredom never trying something else.

Can you start doing ‘other stuff’ as early as level 10? Yup, but unless you are really, really motivated, you need help from a guild or group of friends. Also can you hit level 50 without quest grinding? Yup, and it’s actually easier than I though. My last 3-4 levels have been gained without doing a single quest, or even focusing on getting XP really, and at level 37, I don’t feel the pressure to hit 50 so I can do ‘end-game’ stuff.

And when I say you can start doing other stuff, I don’t mean in a charity or ‘gimped’ way; you can start doing the sandbox stuff to full effect early. The only thing you really can’t do without suffering are cross-continent trade runs (both because of sea mob agro, and of course PvP) and getting involved in the end-game PvP zones, but that’s basically it. Gathering, crafting, harvesting, house design/activities, trade packs, etc; none of that is really level gated.

We’ll see what happens when they open the 3rd continent. I don’t know much about it, but certainly I’m sure the big guilds will play a large role in terms of castles and control (though I believe sieges are capped at 100v100, so there is a limit to the ‘bring more’ problem)

  • “I’m still not sold on ArcheAge though. I know you are, but I can’t see the fun in a quest grind to unlock the sorta-sandbox at the end dominated by purely a pvp mindset and big guilds.”

    exactly my feelings…

  • The queues on Archeage have improved drastically, they doubled the servers.Give it a go if you having a drought 😉
